“Weiying, come back to Gusu with me.”

Lan Wangji is having a nightmare again.

Lan Wangji is having a nightmare again.

It always starts out the same. First, it's the night he saw Wei Wuxian again after months without an answer to his inquires. It had horrified him to see the changes in Weiying then—the way his kind smile was replaced by a cruel curve of his lips, the way his eyes, always filled with laughter and sunshine, had turned red with resentment.

It always starts out the same. First, it's the night he saw Wei Wuxian again after months without answer to his inquires. It had horrified him to see the changes in Weiying then—the way his kind smile was replaced by a cruel curve of his lips, the way his eyes, always filled with laughter and sunshine, had turned red with resentment.

Red like blood.

It always played out the same way. Lan Wangji would ask (plead) for Weiying to return to Gusu with him; Weiying would hesitate for a fraction of a second before the scarlet in his eyes would return, resentful energy pouring out of him like an ocean.

Then, it would shift to the scene in the cave.

“Get lost.”

The thoughts that were running through his head as he grasped Weiying's hand firmly in his own— if I had been warmer to him, could I have prevented this? If I had tried harder to convince him to come with me, would this have never happened?

His words lost on Weiying, whose eyes were dull and lifeless like the corpses he controlled. The thirty-three members of his own sect he had wounded, the way the blood in his veins had ran cold when he heard the news.

The Yiling Patriarch is dead!

Dead. Dead-

“Lanzhan? Why are you up so early in the morning?”

Lan Wangji jolts awake. Sunshine streams in through the gaps of the curtains (Weiying's doing, no doubt about it) and when he turns over, he's greeted by the soft, sleepy, adorable face of his lover.

Right. The Yiling Patriarch had died thirteen years ago, but Weiying is back. He's back and he's here to stay, and he reaches out with his hands to hold him closer.

“Lanzhan…?”

“I love you.”

There's a sharp intake of breath from the other before his lips curve up into a soft smile.

“Lanzhan! I love you too,” he replies, and Weiying is so radiant for a moment that he cannot speak.
