Josh had been caught completely off guard when Kate had stepped towards him and confidently pressed her lips to his. For a single moment he froze, utterly shocked at what was happening in that moment.
That split second of shocked hesitation meant that Kate's lips were still pressed to his and her arms were thrown around his neck when Maya's key turned in the lock and the door swung open.
Josh jerked away from Kate who didn't seem abashed at all to have been discovered.
Maya's eyes were wide, completely taken aback by what was taking place in front of her. In a swift movement she stepped backward out of the apartment, slamming the door behind her and heading for the stairs.
"Maya" Josh shouted, turning to go after her. He stopped with a jerk when Kate caught his wrist and tried to keep him in place, his shoulder straining at the harsh moment.
"Stop" Josh snapped, pulling his arm back from her and heading for the door. He was across his apartment in three large steps. He yanked his door open and dashed down the hall, not bothering to close it behind him.
He shot towards the staircase, praying he would catch Maya before she made it to the street and he lost her in the friday night crowd who were already out in full force.
Josh saw a flash of her blond hair disappear around the corner as he rounded the staircase.
"Maya" He called out again, jumping past a few stairs and onto the next landing, trying to close the gap between them.
With a burst of energy he managed to catch her arm before she made it to the landing of the second floor.
"Maya I can-"
"Shhh" She cut him off. Josh had been afraid of this. That Maya would be too worked up to give him the chance to defend himself. The only shred of hope he had was that she hadn't wrenched her arm out of his grasp. At least she wasn't so disgusted at him that she couldn't stand him touching her.
"We don't have time for this!" Maya hissed, throwing a panicked glance over her shoulder. Josh narrowed his eyes, his mind still running a mile a minute.
"What are you-"
"Randy is going to be here any minute" she cut him off once again. Josh was more confused than ever.
"If he shows up and finds her here with you, he will lose any trace of confidence he's managed to gain back. So I am going to go deal with him, and you are going to go deal with that" she spat, jabbing her finger at the ceiling in the direction they had come from.
"Maya-" Josh began again.
"Just go get and then meet us there ok? We can talk then"
Maya turned on her heel and hurried down the rest of the stairs. Josh stood still in the place where she had left them, shocked for the second time that night into silence. He wanted to go after her, wanted to take her in his arms and make her understand what was happening, but he couldn't go against her wishes at that moment, not with everything he'd already done tonight. He slowly turned back towards the stairs, dreading what waited for him back in his apartment. He started to climb the stairs once again.
As much as he dreaded going back to his apartment to face the mess that Kate had created, he needed to go find Maya as soon as possible. He hated the thought of her wandering around the city believing that he had intentionally betrayed her.
When Josh arrived back to his apartment, Kate had settled herself onto the couch. She appeared completely at ease. She looked up at the sound of him closing the door behind himself.
Kate rose from the couch and walked towards him as if she expected he was going to wrap his arms around her.
Josh walked in the kitchen, placing his hands against the counter and staring at the ground. His head was pounding from the night's events.
"I'm sorry she had to find out like that" Kate muttered, coming up behind him and wrapping her arms around his waist. Josh pulled her hands off of him. Kate sighed.
"I know you're upset but she was going to find out eventually anyway" Kate stated, reaching out a rubbing a small circle on his lower back as if trying to comfort him. Josh recoiled from her touch, spinning around quickly to face Kate, forcing her to step back.
"There's nothing for her to find out about Kate. There is nothing going on between us"
" Don't you see Josh? We don't have to lie to ourselves anymore! And now that Maya knows there's nothing standing between us, we can just be together." Kate stepped towards him again but Josh pushed past her.
" You need to leave" Josh stated, pulling his front door open and gesturing for Kate to walk through it. Kate looked at him with something that looked like pity.
"You're freaking out. I get it. I did when I realized what was happening between us. Let's just sit down and talk for a while. We can figure out what to do next"
"There is no us Kate '' He snapped. He didn't have the time or the patience to handle this with kid gloves.
"You are not the main character in a romantic comedy and I am not your leading man. This is the real world and in the real world you're acting like a crazy person"
"Josh" She said in a voice he knew she thought was seductive.
" I don't get why you're fighting this. We make sense" Josh closed his eyes. Letting out a deep breath and trying to calm himself.
"I have never thought of you as anything more than a friend but more importantly I have a girlfriend, who I love"
"She's just a kid Josh. She's not right for you! I don't know what kind of spell she has over you but if you'd just open your eyes you'd see what kind of girl she is"
"And what kind of girl is that?" He demanded, the fury in his stomach burning threw him.
" You really want me to say it?" Kate asked, clearly growing frustrated.
"She's not the type of girl you bring home to your parents. She's a go nowhere, do nothing type. I don't even understand what the two of you talk about. We go to ivy league institutions and she's what? Undeclared at a college that's basically one step above a state school. She's the girl you have fun with, not the girl you marry. Now you've had your fun but it's time to put the toy away.I'm ready to start my life and I know you are too, so let's start now."
Josh's ears were ringing. He could hardly believe what he was hearing.
"Fuck you" he spat. Kate's eyes went wide. Her mouth dropped open slightly as she was shocked into silence.
"I always knew you were a little stuck up but I didn't pick up on what a cold hearted bitch you are. You don't get to talk about my girl like that. She's more than the girl I take home to my parents. She's my family. She's everything I could have ever asked for and one day I'm pretty sure I am going to marry her and I really don't give a shit what you think about that. I really thought we were friends but you've proven tonight that you really don't know or care about me at all. Now get the fuck out of my house" He demanded, holding the door open wide for her.
Kate narrowed her eyes at him but grabbed her bag from where she had dropped it. She paused as she passed him in the doorway.
Her voice was low and breathy when she spoke, leaning into his ear, her hot breath on his neck.
"You may think that now, but I guarantee you'll be thinking about me tonight"
She brushed past him and strutted down the fall, swaying her hips, hoping that Josh was watching her leave. He had already shut the door and was leaning against it. His heart was pounding and he could barely think straight.
He realized that he still didn't have a shirt on. God he could only imagine what Maya had thought when she walked in to see him bare chested with Kate pressed against him. He shuddered as he hurried into his bedroom, pulled on the first clean shirt he touched and grabbed his keys, heading for the door.
He needed to make it to that party as soon as possible. He needed to find his girl before she decided she wasn't him anymore.
