Chapter 110

SS 110

When Maya woke up on sunday morning and glanced out her window, she saw that it was snowing lightly. She laid in bed, watching the flakes slowly fall outside. For a moment it almost felt peaceful, but then the sound of a car horn blasting from the street below broke the spell.

She picked up her phone and saw that it was already 10 in the morning. She let out a huff. She couldn't believe her weekend was going by so quickly. She and Shawn had lounged around the apartment for most of the day Saturday, catching up further on each other's lives for the past few weeks and taking turns tossing a balled up pair of socks for Hudson to chase.

The floor of her bedroom was freezing on her bare feet as she swung her legs out of bed and shuffled towards her dresser for something warmer to wear. She pulled on a pair of fuzzy socks and Josh's NYU sweatshirt that he had gifted her.

Hudson jumped off the bed and followed her into the living room. Judging from the closed door, Shawn was still asleep in his bedroom. Maya shuffled over to the kitchen and on a whim pulled down a mixing bowl from one of the cabinets. She took out her phone and shot Riley a quick text.

Waffles?

Rileys response came a second later, and she replied with a string of exclamation marks.

Maya started measuring flour and baking soda into the bowl and a few seconds later a knock came on the door.

"It's too cold to come up the fire escape" Riley complained as she entered the apartment, still in her pajamas herself.

Riley slid into a seat at the kitchen table and happily accepted the cup of coffee that Maya placed in front of her.

"So" Maya began, pouring a measured cup of milk into the mixture. " Lucas left?" she questioned.

Riley nodded, looking down at her coffee cup.

" Yep. He got on a plane back to Austin yesterday afternoon"

"How did you leave things?"

Riley shrugged.

" We said goodbye," Riley replied casually. Maya rolled her eyes.

"Expand please"

" I don't know! Everything just still feels so complicated. We're not together and we don't want to be together, at least not right now, but it feels like we're linked. Even before everything happened with" Riley gestured to her now perfectly flat stomach that underneath her sweatshirt was marred with the scar of her surgery.

"He was your first love. Supposedly you never forget them" Maya replied comfortingly as she poured the mix she had just made into the waffle maker.

"In a way, I kind of feel like I failed," Riley said quietly. Maya whipped around to stare at her best friend.

"What?" Maya asked, utterly confused. Riley wouldn't meet Maya's eyes.

"I don't know! I guess I just grew up with my parents who have only ever loved each other. That was my example of love. That you find someone and you hold onto them no matter what. So for a long time I thought that that was Lucas for me and now everything is different"

Maya took a seat next to Riley and grabbed her hand.

"Riles. You're not a failure. Most people fall in and out of love a million times before they get it right, and sometimes they fall in and out of love with the same person before it sticks. You're 18! Just because you're parents were married at your age doesn't mean that you've failed at love"

"Easy for you to say!" Riley teased.

" You're dating the same boy that you've been in love with since you were 14!"

Maya rolled her eyes.

"Yeah and if we broke up tomorrow" she wrapped her fist against the wood table to ward off the jinx " We wouldn't have failed. Life is about getting up and trying again no matter how much it hurts"

"You sound like a greeting card," Riley grumbled.

"You're just mad that i'm right" Maya teased, pulling the first waffle out of the press and sliding it onto a plate in front of her best friend.

"Now eat some whip cream. It'll make you feel better" Maya prompted, placing the aerosol canister by Rileys plate.

"I thought I smelled breakfast," Shawn announced excitedly as he emerged from his room.

"I think this is actually classified as brunch," Riley stated through a mouth full of waffles, gesturing at the time on the stove. Shawn shrugged and gratefully accepted the waffle that Maya placed in front of him.

"I almost forgot!" Riley began as she took another bite of her waffle.

" Mom wants everyone downstairs for 4"

"Why? Is something going on?" Shawn asked as he tucked into his breakfast. Sunday dinner was a standing tradition at the Matthew/Lawrence apartment but they usually didn't show up until after 6.

"Is it an early bird special?" Maya teased. Riley shrugged.

"She said she's got something she wants to talk to everyone about"

Maya narrowed her eyes. " That sounds ominous"

"We'll see"

There was a feeling of dread building in Maya's stomach as she walked into the Rileys apartment for dinner that night. She had no proof that whatever Topanaga wanted to talk to them about was a bad thing, but she'd felt uneasy ever since Rileys announcement. She happily accepted the glass of white wine that Topanaga offered her as soon as she walked through the door, and had to stop herself from downing the whole thing to calm her nerves.

Josh wasn't there yet, and Maya really wished he would hurry up and get there. Something about being around him always took the edge off her anxiety.

"Sorry i'm late!" Josh called as he entered the apartment 15 minutes later, the rest of the family was all gathered around the sofa, picking away at the cheese plate that had been set out.

"I almost wiped out on a patch of ice," he explained. " It's getting kind of crazy out there"

Glancing out the window everyone could see that the wind was whipping the snow into falling in a sideway slant. Josh shrugged off his jacket, kicked off his shoes and came to sit next to Maya in the spot she had been saving beside her.

Josh placed his hand in hers and his skin was ice cold from the weather outside. The shock of the cold against her own hand made a shiver run up her spine, but she still held onto him, grateful for the anchor to sanity he provided.

Topanaga stood up, a slightly nervous expression on her face.

"So" she began, looking into the faces of each of her loved ones in turn.

" i've received an offer"

"An offer?" Shawn questioned, looking between Cory and Topanaga.

"Oh my god are you moving to London for real this time?" Maya exclaimed, a hand flying up to cover her mouth.

"No no!" Topanaga quickly corrected " it's not a job offer. It's an offer on the cafe"

" The cafe?" Riley questioned, still confused.

"As in" Maya pointed at the floor, referring to Hart's Heart a few floors down.

" Yes" Topanaga confirmed.

" I didn't know you'd put it on the market" Shawn replied, feeling shocked. Cory stepped in to answer

"We didn't. A real estate agent approached us yesterday. Apparently he has a client that fell in love with it on sight. So they made a cold offer"

"It's a lot of money," Topanaga continued to explain.

"It would be a bigger return on our investment than we ever expected"

"So you're considering it?" Maya asked. Her whole face was going numb and a ringing was starting in her ears.

"I want everyone to consider it," Topanaga replied. "This is a family business. So it's a family decision. That includes the two of you" Topanaga gestured to Shawn and Maya. At some point Shawn had takens Maya's other hand and she was now bookshelves on either side by the two men of her life.

"Part of this business is yours Maya. Your mother helped build it" Topanaga continued " So if we made the decision to sell, part of the profit would be yours too"

The mention of her mother made Maya's throat feel tight. It was hard to think about a time when the space downstairs had been her mother's domain, the first job where her mother had felt like she belonged, like she was doing something right. It was harder still to think of someone scraping her mother's name off of the window downstairs, of a different awning stretching out over the door.

"I don't want to do this unless everyone agrees. I would be perfectly happy to keep the cafe, but this is too much money for us not to consider" Topanaga explained further.

Maya wasn't sure what to think and she definitely didn't know what to say. Her mind was running a million miles a minute. Both Shawn and Josh were squeezing her hands and the pressure was the only thing grounding her to earth.

Maya stood up suddenly, overcome by a sudden need to be outside. She felt as if the walls were about to close in on her.

"I'm going to go," she said, pulling her hands free and headed towards the door.

"Oh honey don't!" Topanaga began.

" I just remembered that I have to-" but she couldn't come up with an excuse.

" We didn't mean to upset you" Cory said, standing up and making as if to walk towards her.

"No you didn't! I'm fine I just need to, to think" Maya promised, turning towards the door so that no one could see her face.

She had brought her packed duffle bag down with her from the apartment so she could leave to go back to the dorms after dinner. She grabbed her bag and her coat and hurried out the door. She rushed down the stairs and out the front door of the building. The cold air hit her like a slap to the face. Her skin exploded into pins and needles from the shock of the temperature. She immediately wanted to retreat back into the warmth but she pushed herself forward.

"Maya!" a voice called from behind her, but she couldn't stop. She had to press forward. She had to keep moving.

She felt a hand wrap around the top of her arm but she pulled against it.

"Maya" the voice came from behind her again, softer this time, almost pleading. Maya couldn't bear to look back at Josh. Couldn't stand the idea of him seeing the hot tears that were threatening to stream down her cheeks and freeze in place.

Josh, who was much taller than her, used the advantage his longer legs gave him to overtake Maya, stepping in front of her and causing her to stop abruptly. She tried to swerve past him.

"Woah woah woah" he placed his hands on either of her shoulders.

" I'm fine," she said abruptly, not wanting to talk.

"Ok. I believe you. Do you want me to leave you alone?" He offered, watching her carefully for her reaction, only wanting what was best for her. Maya deflated. After a moment she shook her head. She stepped forward and leaned into Josh's chest, listening for his steady heartbeat through his jacket. Josh wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight to him. The snow and wind whipped against them, but for a few minutes they just stood there.

"Come on" Josh finally said, keeping one arm wrapped around Maya and leading her down the street.

"Let's go home"
