Chapter 108

SS 108

When Maya opened the door to her room, it was empty. She figured that Sasha had decided to go out after all. Maya was secretly glad that she wasn't there. After the mess that was dinner that night, she was ready to decompress a little.

She shrugged off her jacket and hung it on its place on the hook by the door. She kicked off her shoes and shoved them against the walls so that Sasha wouldn't trip on them when she inevitably came home drunk later that night. Maya grabbed her robe and headed into the bathroom that she and Sasha shared with the other two girls in the adjoining room. Maya locked the door connecting the bathroom to the other girls, and turned on the shower as hot as she could stand it.

She clambered out of her clothes and stepped under the hot spray of water. She felt her shoulders immediately relax as the water washed over her. It was only wednesday and the week already felt like it had been incredibly long. As she combed the conditioner through her hair she considered what still stretched before her. Farkles reaction was still on her mind, and she worried about how Riley was feeling about the whole thing. She thought about the rough draft of her world religion essay she needed to work on before her professors office hours on friday. She thought about waking up in the same room as Sasha and trying to make things feel normal and right again. She thought about needing to go home and do laundry and talk to her dad. She felt like she hadn't seen him in ages, but it had only been a week.

Shawns career had been picking up more and more which meant he was spending more and more time on the road again. He had been turning down jobs for years to stay close to home for her, but after she'd moved into the dorms she had encouraged him to take on more projects. Still, she missed him. He was never gone for more than a few weeks at a time, but there was a part of her, the part of her that was a little girl who had been abandoned by her father when she was barely old enough to remember, that felt that known sting of abandonment every time he left the city. She knew he'd be home that friday and she thought she might stay the night at the apartment so that they could hang out.

Once she was satisfied that her hair was clean, Maya turned off the shower, and reached around for her towel. She dried herself off, pulled on her robe and moved to wash her face and brush her teeth. Once she was finished in the bathroom she went back into her and Sasha's room and crawled into bed and for once fell asleep early.

Maya woke with a start to the lights flickering on and a muffled crash. She sat up in bed and saw Sasha struggling to take off her shoes.

"Shit. Sorry did I wake you up? I'm not used to coming home without you" Maya could smell the vodka coming off of Sashas breath. Sasha stumbled in and fell down on her bed, still struggling with her shoes.

"Here" Maya said sleepily, swinging her legs off her bed and scooting to the edge so she could reach across the space between their two beds.

She pulled off Sashas chunky platform boots that were still wet from the slush on the ground outside.

"You should have come out tonight!" Sasha said dreamily, letting Maya work at the laces on her boots while she laid back on her mattress.

" I think the bartender was new. He was pouring doubles and only charging for singles!"

"Are you sure he didn't just like you?" Maya joked, taking Sashas boots and placing them neatly at the foot of her bed.

"I mean he did give me his number" Sasha giggled. Maya rolled her eyes knowingly.

"I missed you" Sasha slurred, crawling under her blankets fully clothed. Maya was about to respond but she saw that Sasha was already asleep.

Maya glanced at the clock on her desk. It was just past four am. After the kerfuffle of getting Sasha settled in bed, she felt wide awake. She decided to be proactive and pulled up the religion essay she'd been meaning to work on. By the time that 6:30 rolled around, her draft was in much better shape and ready to be brought to her professor during office hours later that week. Maya snuck back into the bathroom, careful not to wake the snoring Sasha. She brushed her teeth, washed her face and then returned to her room to pull on something comfortable to go down to breakfast in.

She knew it was too early to meet with Cassidy or any of the other girls she was supposed to be having breakfast with but she figured sitting alone for a while and drinking coffee was better than staying quiet in her room trying not to wake the sleeping bear that was Sasha.

She shuffled down stairs in her pajama pants, slippers and favourite worn in Hudson sweater. The dining hall in the basement of her dorm building was fairly quiet before seven. There were a few sleepy people nursing cups of coffee and trying to get themselves pulled around enough for their 8 am classes.

Maya headed to the self serve coffee station and poured herself a large cup of steamy black coffee. There was a stack of the school's newspaper by the coffee creamer and she picked one up on a whim. She shuffled over to one of the many open tables and plopped herself down, content to wait for the girls from her floor to drop in one by one. As she waited, she began to pluck away at the crossword puzzle on page 9 of the paper. It was twenty minutes later when Cassidy arrived in the dining hall. She seemed almost surprised to see her there.

"You came!"

" Of course I came. Best coffee in the city" Maya joked, lifting the cup of watery coffee that was nutritious all across campus for it's weakness.

"Been here a while?" Cassidy asked, looking down at the almost completed crossword puzzle. Maya shrugged.

" Have you eaten already?" Cassidy questioned, jerking her head in the direction of the hot food station.

"Not yet" Maya replied, getting to her feet and following Cassidy over to load up her plate.

A few other girls joined their group over the next twenty minutes, each surprised and delighted to see Maya among their hadn't been to a proper breakfast in so long, usually to bone tired to get up after a long night out with Sasha and the other girls who slunk around the different clubs near their campus. It seemed strange to Maya that this whole other social world had been existing while she stayed out late and slept away half the day. It was easy and comfortable to hang out with these bright and sunny girls and talk about their classes and crushes over plates of fruit and french toast.

"Is that your boyfriend?" Cassidy asked when she saw the lockscreen on Maya's phone.

"Yeah that's Josh" Maya said slightly abashedly. The photo was a candid shot that Amy had taken of the two of them over Christmas break when Josh and Maya lifted off her feet and had been about to dunk her in the snow pile.

"Let me see!" requested one of the other girls Mia.

"Yeah that's disgustingly cute"

"Where do I get one?" Cassidy complained.

"Go skulk around the NYU campus. That's where I picked him up" Maya joked, taking her phone back.

" That makes good guys go to Hudson" Cassidy complained wistfully.

"Seriously" Mia agreed " It's like frat boy city around here"

"I just want a good normal guy! Is that really so much to ask for? Does that make me a bad feminist? To spend so much time thinking about how badly I want a guy to like me? I know that I'm enough alone but for fucks sake I just want one alright!" the words coming out of Cassidys mouth in her soft southern drawl made Maya's heart swell slightly with affection. Cassidy was the kind of soft hearted soul that made you want to help her.

Mia started humming the opening song to snow white ' one day my prince will come' causing Cassidy to giggle and swat at her.

…..

Maya decided to spend the night at Joshes again when Sasha came back to the room after classes and told her she was headed out to the club again that night. Sasha extended a half hearted invitation but she already knew that Maya was going to decline. Feeling a little guilty, Maya asked Sasha to have lunch with her tomorrow. Sasha accepted. It was a step forward to feeling like friends again.

Once it was clear that Sasha was headed out for a late night, Maya knew it was in her best interest to head back to alphabet city and the safety of Josh's apartment. She didn't feel like being woken up at 4 in the morning again by a very intoxicated teenage girl.

She got to Josh's apartment a few minutes after he did. Josh kissed her hello and then ducked into his tiny bathroom to take a shower. Maya busied herself in the kitchen, using the ingredients she'd bought from the grocery store to begin making the apple cinnamon bread that Harts Heart Cafe was famous for. She had just slid the loaves out of the oven when Josh emerged back into the living room, his hair dripping wet and a towel around his waist.

"That smells amazing" He complimented, walking over and leaning across the peninsula counter to take a whiff of the fresh baked goods.

"Consider it my rent money" Maya joked, carefully loosening the sides of the loaves so that they would come out smoothly once she flipped them upside down and out of the pans.

"Seems like a fair trade," Josh teased, walking around the peninsula and wrapping his arms around his girlfriend. Maya leaned up to kiss him, interlacing her fingers behind his neck. She sighed into the kiss, feeling any tension she'd been holding throughout the day ebb away. Just as Josh began to deepen the kiss and press Maya back against his kitchen counter, the sound of the front door of the apartment banging open broke them apart. The shock caused the two to jump apart and the towel around Josh's waist to slip, causing him to hurriedly catch it before it hit the floor and covered himself again.

"Well she broke my heart!" Josh's best friend and former NYU roommate Randall dramatically swept into the apartment and threw himself down on the couch as if he were mortally wounded.

"Dude, I gave you that key for emergencies" Josh said pointedly, still trying to secure the towel around his waist again.

"Dude are you not listening? This is an emergency! My life is over!" Randy lifted his head from the couch and glanced over at where Josh and Maya stood in the kitchen.

"Also why are you naked?"

" I am not naked!" Josh proclaimed, gesturing at the towel " and this is my house! I can be naked if I want!"

Maya shook her head at the two boys and nudged Josh with her elbow.

"Go get dressed. I'll do damage control"

Maya walked over to the couch and sat down gingerly next to Randy.

"Kate dumped you?" she asked carefully.

"Dumped me, ghosted me, ripped my heart out and tore it into a million pieces before stomping on it with her stupid expensive shoes"

"I told you this would happen" Josh stated as he walked out of his bedroom, fully dressed once more.

"Not helpful!" Maya snapped, turning back to Randy. Josh shrugged. He had been nervous from the minute that Kate and Randy started seeing each other. Randy had been obsessing over Kate since their freshman year, and Kate rarely kept a boy on the line for more than a few months, preferring her freedom over much else.

"What happened?" Maya asked carefully. Randy sighed.

"Everything was going great, or at least I thought it was. So a few weeks ago my parents came to the city to visit, and I asked Kate if she wanted to have dinner with us. She said she couldn't and I was like alright cool. She's in law school. She's busy. But then she stopped responding to my texts and she never returned any of my calls. I thought ok she's just busy with school or she's sick or something but I can see on snap maps that she'd been all over the city, in different clubs every night and then this afternoon she sent me this"

Randy had pulled up a message on his phone.

Randall,

I think it's best if we stop seeing each other. It's not you. I need space.

Best regards

Katlyn Graff

"7 months together and all I get is a text that says best regards?"

Josh came over to the couch with a slice of the apple bread. Randy grabbed a chunk off of the plate and shoved it in his mouth.

"Help yourself," Josh joked, pressing the plate into his friend's hands.

"Thanks," Randy said through a mouthful.

" Why does love have to be so hard? I just want to be happy" Randy mopped.

" Kate wasn't the one for you dude. You'll find the right one eventually' Randy rolled his eyes at him.

"Easy for you to say. You're in a happy healthy relationship where you guys love each other and shit. I am alone" Randy slumped back on the couch again. " i hate being alone"

Maya considered for a second.

"Hey Rand, after you've taken a couple of weeks to get Kate out of your system, I think I have someone you might want to meet"
