Chapter 105

SS 105

" She said what?" Riley half exploded, nearly knocking over her coffee cup in her surprise.

" Do I really have to say it again?" Maya groaned, bringing her own mug to her lips.

The two girls were seated together at a back table at Harts, and Maya had just finished explaining the situation with Sasha.

"No. I'd actually rather you didn't. I'm in shock. I mean I've never met the girl but I never dreamed she would be so so" Riley snapped her fingers, trying to come up with the right word.

"Evil? Unfair? Disgusting?" Maya offered

"Heartless" Riley finished.

Maya let out a big sigh. The whole Sasha thing was weighing heavy on her heart. The sting of the betrayal was still fresh.

"It just doesn't make any sense" Maya said for what felt like the millionth time in the past few days.

" Not everything in life does," Riley said reasonably, pushing the plate that contained the pastry the two of them had been sharing towards Maya.

" I should have never gone to Pennsylvania" Riley said suddenly, chastising herself.

"What?" Maya asked, confused.

" Going to UPenn was a mistake. I should have stayed here and then we could have been roommates and none of this would have ever happened" Riley explained, the guilt she felt written all over her face.

"Riles" Maya began, reaching for her best friend's hand " Come on. We can't play what if"

Riley nodded. There was a lot that wouldn't have happened if she'd never gone away.

"I'm thinking about transferring next year," Riley confessed.

"Really? To where?" Maya was surprised. It was clear that Riley's first year in Philadelphia hadn't been everything she wanted it to be, but going to the University of Pennsylvania had been Riley's dream since freshman year.

"Anywhere in the city that will take me. My grades from first semester were pretty good but maybe not good enough for Columbia or Barnard. Maybe Pace? Or Fordham? City college, the new school. I can apply to transfers to them all and see how it turns out" Riley mused.

"Are you sure that's what you want?" Maya asked, concerned about Riley making any decisions in her current headspace. So much has happened in the past few weeks.

" I just don't know what else to do. I don't think I was ready to leave home" Riley admitted, looking down at the hands clasped on the table.

"Well apply for the transfers, consider all your options, and then in a few months when things are settled and your head is clear you can decide"

Selfishly, Maya hoped that Riley would stay. She wanted to be there for her friend to lean on if things went sideways again.

"When did you become so reasonable and wise?" Riley asked teasingly.

" Comes with the territory of being a lame boring bitch" Maya replied coolly, flipping her hair over her shoulder dramatically.

"Ugh" Riley groaned. " It gets worse every time you say it"

"You're telling me"

"Are you sure you don't want me to beat her up?" Riley asked.

" I don't know how much damage you and your tiny fists would do"

"Yee of little faith!" Riley teased back before getting serious

"But really. Are you ok?"

Maya bit at the inside of her cheek before shrugging.

"I mean I guess it doesn't really matter. At the end of the day I know that I didn't do anything wrong and that she's the bitch"

Riley smiled and lifted her mug to clink against Maya's

"There we agree"

"But" Maya began, self doubt seeping in around the edges.

"Maya" Riley chastised. Maya looked up sheepishly before defending herself.

" There has to be more to the story! She bit my head off out of nowhere"

Riley considered before speaking.

"Maybe there is something else going on but you might just have to be ok with not 't make her a project that you have to fix"

Maya sighed.

Maya twisted the spare key Josh had lent her in the lock of the door and let herself into his apartment. She shrugged out of her coat and slid it into the tiny closet by the door before moving into the tiny kitchen and pulling open the drawer where she knew Josh kept all the take out menus from the places he liked best.

This was Josh's longest day of the week. Between classes, meetings with his thesis advisor and volunteer hours he wasn't home until past 7. Maya figured that if she was crashing at his place, she might as well have dinner waiting for him.

She'd thought about trying to make dinner that night and had even stopped at a grocery store and wandered the aisles hoping that inspiration would strike but had quickly given up. Maya only really knew how to bake and Josh's apartment was so small that if she burned anything the smell of smoke would linger forever. She decided on Morocan because she knew it was one of Josh's favourites and that they rarely ordered it because the best place was notoriously slow and the food wouldn't show up for at least two hours. So by the time they got around to ordering dinner they were too hungry for the wait.

If she ordered the food right then, it would arrive 10 minutes before Josh got off the train. Maya placed the order, set her phone down and surveyed the apartment before her.

She had two hours to kill and wasn't sure what to do with herself. She'd already completed all the school work she needed to do for the day, having had the hours between her morning class and meeting with Riley free to focus on school. Shed usually spent her time between classes with Sasha, goofing off in one of the student common rooms or giggling about whatever fresh drama had broken out on their floor. It made her shudder to think of the fact that everything that had happened between her and Sasha was probably the latest and greatest gossip circulating their dorm. She pushed that aside. She'd already put too much energy into the mess today.

She flitted around the miniscule living room, straightening the little bit of clutter that had accumulated, stubbing her toe on the coffee table as she tried to get the pillows on the little sofa to sit just right.

Most of the time Josh's apartment didn't feel small. It felt cozy and homey, but in this moment, Maya felt like the walls were closing in. Maybe it was just the idea of her moving in there. How could this tiny space ever fit the two of them and all their stuff? Wouldn't they just be on top of eachother? Wouldn't it just breed resentment? She went into the bedroom and opened the tiny closet in which she had once been caught hiding from Eric. Was it even possible to fit her clothes in here along with Josh's?

She knew it wasn't her only option. She could just go home. It would be easy to pack up her boxes and shuffle back to her bedroom in the apartment she and Shawn had shared so harmoniously. She could request a room change and start over again in one of Hudson's 4 other resident buildings or she could just grit her teeth and not let Sasha bully her out of her own room.

Maybe she was just freaking out about this as a defense mechanism. She knew she was a bit of a self sabotager. She knew that she could be insanely happy with Josh in this little apartment, living their own little life, together.

By the time the food arrived, Maya had talked herself down, and the walls were no longer inching towards her. She had just finished unloading the containers onto the counter and pulling plates down from the cabinet when she heard Josh's key in the lock.

"Did you order Nuba?" Josh asked excitedly when he saw what was set out in the kitchen.

"How did you guess?" Maya responded sarcastically, passing Josh a plate.

"This is why I keep you around"

"Yes. I have an unparalleled talent for ordering dinner" she teased.

"How was your day?" Josh asked as he piled his plate with food.

"Pretty good. I had lunch with Riley" Maya responded, piling her own plate with food and following Josh over to their customary spots on the couch.

"Did you run into her today?" He asked cautiously. He didn't have to say her name for Maya to know that she was talking about Sasha.

" I did not," she replied with a cool face, focusing on her plate. " She ditched class"

"Are you going to see her tomorrow?" He asked.

" I don't know. I have to go back to the room to get my books for my thursday class so if she's there then" she trailed off, thinking about the possible confrontation.

"I don't really know how long I should wait before trying to talk to her. Like if I go get my books tomorrow and she's in the room do I ignore her or do I try to hash it out. How long do you let a person 'cool off''" Maya asked, putting finger quotes around the final words.

" Honestly babe, It's affecting you so much that you might as well rip off the bandaid"

"I don't like that it's affecting me" Maya pouted.

"So cut it off at the knees. For better or for worse, end it tomorrow"

Maya nodded.

"You're a good hype man" Maya complimented. Josh smiled.

"I got your back" Josh affirmed, lifting his fist for her to bump.

" You just made it lame" Maya teased, although she raised her own fist and knocked it against his, before leaning forward to kiss him.
