43. Unbreakable Connection

...

...

"What?!" Ruby questioned in a loud voice. Disappointment shrouded his tone, as his eyebrows creased. He looked at his mother, blinking. Did he hear her correctly?

Ruby's mother sighed and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Ruby, you'll see Sapphire later. Right now, she needs to get ready for your wedding, and I'm helping her along with your friends."

Ruby bit his lip and scratched the back of his head. "I just wanna talk to her. Please...?"

His mother paused and looked at the door behind her.

Today is Ruby and Sapphire's wedding after months of preparation and being engaged for a year. They decided to hold the wedding in a private hotel in Fortree City with limited guests, including Ruby and Sapphire's junior and senior Pokedex Holders.

The morning started out beautifully; the sun's rays were warm enough to put a smile on anyone's face, and there was a flock of bird-like Pokemon flying on the horizon. Everyone in the hotel woke up early to prepare for the big day. The men were already dressed and taking pictures somewhere in the hotel gardens while the women are either still preparing themselves or helping Sapphire.

Ruby woke up without Sapphire beside him on the bed, and he had come to the conclusion that she woke up early to get ready. He told Sapphire that he would help her with her dress and make-up (though he preferred not to have any makeup on her for it may 'destroy her natural beauty'), but his mother insisted that he shouldn't. She said to just let her and the girls help Sapphire prepare for her big day.

It's not that Ruby didn't trust his mother, but he felt that he couldn't prepare without seeing Sapphire first. With this in mind, he immediately barged into the room where Sapphire is getting ready, ignoring every person in it. His mother stopped him before he could reach the dressing room Sapphire was in currently and told him that there was 'no need' for his assistance.

Ruby told his mom that he trusted her for helping Sapphire, but explained that he wanted to see Sapphire before he gets dressed for their big day. His mother sighed, telling him that he should just wait until Sapphire walked down the aisle in her wedding dress.

He was disappointed at this, but continued to plead with his mother to see Sapphire.

"Just a few exchanges of words, please, mom."

After a moment of pausing, his mother let out another sigh and nodded, making Ruby smile.

"Thanks, Mom! You're the best!" Ruby approached the door, but stopped when his mother placed her hand on his shoulder.

"You can talk to Sapphire but not see her, okay?"

Ruby's face fell and he could only sigh. To be fair, he wanted to see and talk to Sapphire, but it seemed like he couldn't have both. "Can I at least hold her hand?"

His mother couldn't help but giggle at that. She couldn't help but think how romantic that would be. He had changed a lot for the better because of Sapphire. "Ask Sapphire about that, not me."

Ruby just nodded and proceeded towards the door to the dressing room. He balled his right fist and knocked on it three times.

"I'll answer it!" a cheerful voice beamed.

Ruby heard footsteps drawing closer, and the door later opened to reveal his senior Blue. He tried to peek behind her just to get a glimpse, but she blocked it with her hand. He just furrowed his brow as displeasure cloaked his face.

"Ruby! What are you doing here? You should get ready, you know? Red, Silver, and the boys are already taking pictures in the gardens. You should go there too once you're done getting ready."

"I know," Ruby muttered and stood up straight. "I just wanna talk to Sapphire before I get ready."

Blue rose an eyebrow and scanned him from head to toe. Ruby just gulped but tried his best to hide his nervousness. He reminded himself that this is his wedding day and Blue's teasing shouldn't embarrass him. "Hmm. You're just gonna talk to her, right? You're not gonna see her?"

Ruby's shoulder dropped at that as his heart sank. "My mom says I couldn't see Sapphire until later," he muttered in a sad tone.

"Good!" Blue closed the door, leaving a stunned Ruby behind. "Oh, Sapphire! Your husband is here to talk to you! But you're not allowed to see him yet, okay?" she called in a sing-song tune.

Ruby blinked for a moment and blushed. Hearing Blue call him 'Sapphire's husband' did have a nice ring to it. It was embarrassing, but he liked it. He would definitely be Sapphire's husband once this day ended.

"Ruby?"

"Sapphire!" Ruby's energy suddenly flared up into its maximum state. He could feel himself smiling, as excitement filled his veins. Sapphire's voice worked like a perfect cure for his recent dissatisfaction. "Hey," He placed his hand on the door while pressing his ears on the wooden board.

"Hey," Sapphire responded, forgetting that there are a few ladies like her coach and Blue behind her. A smile perked on her lips. She may have given Ruby a kiss on the cheek before leaving the bed, but hearing him for the first time today made her happy. She honestly couldn't wait to see him again but like Blue told her: she couldn't and had to wait until she walked down the aisle. "What're ya doin' here? Shouldn't you be gettin' ready?"

"After this, I will. Promise," Ruby smiled. "I just wanna see you first. Well, sort of, but this still counts, right?"

There was an echoing of 'aww' heard across the room, causing Ruby to blush. He forgot that his mother and some girls like his seniors, Crystal and Yellow, were right behind him and they could hear everything.

On the other side of the door, Sapphire's cheeks couldn't help but flush. She should have been used to it by now, but it was very sweet of him to think about her first. Knowing Ruby, he would worry about if he would look good in formal occasions first above anything else. "Y-Yeah, it counts," she responded and chuckled.

Her soft laughter made his smile widen. His heart fluttered at imagining what her giggling face would look like today. He may have seen it many times, but he would never get tired of it. "I'm glad it does," he paused before coughing. "Anyway, can I hold your hand for a little while? I promise I'll get ready soon."

"Alright," Sapphire turned the doorknob and slightly opened the door. She reached out her hand and Ruby held it gently.

Beautiflies twirled in his stomach. Her hand felt warm and somehow softer than before. Did she put on some lotion? he wondered to himself dreamily.

"I'll see you later," he said.

"Get ready, 'kay?"

"I wouldn't miss it for the world."

He gave her hand one last squeeze before letting go despite not wanting to. He sighed and turned around to look at his mother. "Please take care of Sapphire. I know she can handle herself, but still..."

His mother just nodded and patted his shoulder. "You know I will. Now get going. You don't wanna be late on your wedding now, do you?"

Ruby just chuckled. A smug appeared on his face. "Of course not! I don't want to keep my lady waiting."

...

...

...

Ruby took a deep breath and adjusted his bowtie for the nth time of the day. He was wearing a black vest, a white dress shirt, black slacks, black shoes, and an aster flower pinned on his left chest. He managed to get dressed in an hour and opted to go to Sapphire's dressing room just in case he could see her again before the celebration. His mother blocked him from entering the door, however, and ordered his father and Professor Birch to take him to the gardens where the wedding would be held.

It was a truly awkward, silent walk with his future father-in-law and his own father, but he successfully survived.

Ruby released the breath he was holding as his eyes wandered around the garden. There was a white carpet placed in the middle as it stretched from the 'altar' and up to the entrance gate. There were pots of flowers with different colors that were decorated and placed at every meter on both sides. The trees were decorated with hanging light bulbs. The chairs for their limited guests were placed on the sides and their guests were on their seats wearing the fanciest clothes they owned.

He took a glance at his wristwatch to check the time, and released another sigh. In a few minutes, the wedding ceremony would start and he couldn't wait to see Sapphire. But why did he feel so anxious? He knew nothing could ruin this day, but what was making him feel this way? Was it because people like Gold would start whistling or screaming something...inappropriate once he and Sapphire would kiss? He shook his head at that.

They were adults now. Adults like Gold should at least behave in formal events like a wedding. Besides, he could always count on Silver or Crystal to watch over him.

He suddenly heard the keys of piano hum, breaking him out of his trance. He furrowed his eyebrows and saw the pianist playing the piano, making his heart pound faster. He gulped and clenched his fists. It's starting.

"You seemed a bit nervous," his mother uttered, standing beside him along with his father.

Ruby just sighed and looked at them. He tried to hide his anxiety by putting on a smile. He didn't want his parents to know that a confident person like him could be anxious. "I'm not. I just can't wait to see Sapphire."

Sweat dripped from his forehead. His mother's hand reached for her son's shoulder and patted it gently. "It's okay. Sapphire is—"

There was a loud gasp from the crowd as all of them stood up. The last flower girl, who happened to be Wallace and Winona's five-year-old daughter, made it in front of the garden altar, clearing the aisle for everyone to see the bride.

Ruby tried to walk away from his parents, but his father placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping him. He sighed and looked at him, as he bit his lip.

As a quiet man, Norman didn't say a word to his son and just dropped his hand. His face remained indifferent, but on the inside, he was filled with fatherly pride.

Music flowed in the atmosphere as Sapphire slowly started walking down on the aisle. Ruby couldn't help but stare at her in awe as his mouth slowly fell agape. He thanked Arceus, as well as the legendary and mythical Pokemon out there, for giving him the most beautiful person he had ever laid his eyes on.

He couldn't help but gulp, as he observed her. His heart continued racing in his chest. His stomach constantly tying into knots, as if Bug-Type Pokemon were invading it. He never got to see her try her wedding gown once he finished sewing it; his mother insisted that he should wait until their wedding day. But looking at her outfit now was breathtaking. It fits her and it complimented her beautiful appearance perfectly along with the bouquet of flowers she was holding. As she got closer, he noticed that she wasn't wearing any make-up and that alone made her more beautiful.

Ruby always knew that Sapphire was beyond perfect; beyond flawless.

And he was right. Today is just one of those many days that proved as much.

Time seemed to have stopped and Ruby suddenly forgot what he should do when Sapphire halted in front of him. He could only stare at her as his hands started sweating. He tried to speak but no words came out. "I-I..."

Sapphire stared at him, as heat enveloped her cheeks. It was nerve-wracking when she walked down the aisle but looking at Ruby while walking on it made it worthwhile. "Y-Ya look good, Ruby," she spoke, deepening Ruby's blush.

His heart rate increased at that and he just coughed to hold himself together. "Y-You look beautiful, perfect even," he responded and smiled, also deepening the blush on her cheeks.

"T-Thank ya."

His eyes and his smile softened. "Anything for you."

Silence lingered between them for both were too busy at looking into each other's eyes, lost in a world of their own.

Professor Birch's coughing made them snap out of it, however. "Anyway," he started, placing a hand on his son-in-law's shoulder. "Take care of Sapphire for me, Ruby."

Ruby looked at his father-in-law and nodded. His face was serious as determination struck in his eyes. "I will."

"I know Ruby will make you happy, Sapphire, and I know you will make him happy too. I'm so proud of you both!" Ruby's mother declared and hugged her future daughter-in-law with teary eyes. She sounded like she was looking way too ahead in the future, but she knew how much Ruby and Sapphire meant to each other.

Norman, on the other hand, just stood beside his wife and smiled at Sapphire.

"T-Thank ya, a-auntie," Sapphire replied with a smile. She took a deep breath and turned to her side to look at Ruby.

"Ready?" Ruby's smile returned, offering his hand at her.

"Yeah!" she beamed happily and held his hand, interlocking their fingers together, and went closer to the 'altar' where the officiant was standing.

The Officiant looked at the couple and started reading the wedding script. "Welcome family, friends and loved ones. We are gathered here today to celebrate..."

Ruby released another breath he was holding and squeezed Sapphire's feeling her squeeze back. His eyes turned to look at her as a smile perked on his lips. He and Sapphire have been to weddings and he knew how weddings flowed, but it was no excuse to not pay any attention to the officiant during his own wedding. But still, he couldn't help but to look and focus on Sapphire. She looked absolutely amazing today, and he just couldn't take his eyes off her. Her majestic hair, her beautiful face, her amazing personality...he was taking it all in, and it is such a spectacular feeling.

Time passed; Ruby kept stealing glances at Sapphire as the officiant continued to speak. Every peek he took widened his smile. It made his heart pound from glee and excitement.

"Ruby?" the officiant called, breaking him out of his thoughts.

"Yes, sir?" He quickly turned to look at the officiant with a serious look.

"Do you take Sapphire to be your wife? Do you promise to be faithful to her in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love her and to honor her all the days of your life?"

Ruby's smile returned. He first looked at Sapphire before closing his eyes. A soft breeze ran past them as everyone waited for his obvious answer. "I love Sapphire and I would gladly do so!"

The officiant nodded at his passionate answer and turned to look at Sapphire. "Sapphire,"

Ruby felt Sapphire's hand squeezed his and immediately returned it.

"Ya know ya should really be focusing more," Sapphire spoke while taking a glance at the officiant.

Ruby opened his mouth then closed it. So, she noticed. He shouldn't be surprised. She could always read him like a book. "Is it a good excuse to say that you looked so beautiful that I couldn't help but to focus on you instead?"

Sapphire didn't speak after that. She just used her bangs to cover her blushing face and gulped. "Y-You're silly."

"Indeed I am, especially for you," Ruby just chuckled and squeezed their interlocked hands just in time when the officiant finished his words.

"...all the days of your life?"

"I do," Sapphire responded with a smile.

The ring bearers then approached the couple, handing them their wedding rings. Ruby removed his hand on Sapphire to grab the rings. He handed one to Sapphire and grabbed her left hand. He caressed her hand first before slowly sliding the wedding ring onto her left ring finger. Sapphire followed it with a smile on her face.

The officiant had tears in his eyes as he closed the book and smiled. "I'm happy to announce this couple as husband and wife," He took a step back. "You may kiss."

Ruby felt his heart thump even faster than before. He slowly turned to his left to face Sapphire. He smiled. He had many dreams about how their wedding would be, but all of them ended with a kiss. And now that it's here, it felt like all of his dreams came alive. "I love you, Sapphire," he said with one arm placed around her waist and the other caressing her cheek. He pulled her closer, making their lips inches apart.

"I love ya too, Ruby," Sapphire responded. Her heart started beating faster at the thought of kissing Ruby to end their wedding.

A tear fell from Ruby's left eye as he took a deep breath. He closed his eyes, tilted his head and slowly yet passionately pressed his soft lips against hers.

The crowd started cheering and applauding once the newlywed couple shared their kiss as some tears were shed along the way. As for Ruby and Sapphire, however, they didn't hear any of it. They were both busy and lost in their own little world. Both were overjoyed that they were finally married after years of dating each other. Life had always been rough on both Ruby and Sapphire, but they managed to overcome it together. And now, they will be with each other until the very end.

Bonus:

The crowd continued cheering and applauding as the newlywed couple kissed. Most of the applause came from the Pokedex Holders. Black was cheering very loudly along with Pearl, Y, and Gold. X, Green, Lack-Two, and Silver were just clapping along with a small smile on their faces. Red was clapping with a huge grin on his face. Most of the girls were either crying happily or cooing at how romantic the wedding was.

Emerald tried to hide his tears by clapping loudly. He was thankful for his small height; no one could see the tears in his eyes. He's definitely happy that Ruby and Sapphire are finally married. He always thought that they deserved each other. He thought how lucky they were for being each other's first and last romantic relationship before marriage.

"Hey, short stuff, for how long are they gonna kiss?" Gold asked Emerald and let out another loud whistle.

Emerald just shrugged. He honestly didn't care. What mattered most was both Ruby and Sapphire are happy, especially on their wedding day.

"Honestly, they should save it for their honeymoon. Hot and passionate stuff like this is meant for those!" Gold snickered and continued clapping, making Emerald roll his eyes. If Gold even tries to ruin the mood, he would not hesitate to kick him.

I try to make it not sound cliche 'cause I've read a lot of wedding fics with similar themes, but I wanna do this for...you know, for fun. ;w;

The aster flowers were a reference to Randomizer chapter 18 where Ruby gave Sapphire an aster flower (and with Emerald buying a cactus. It's based on my real life experience where I accompany my classmate to the flower shop to buy a sunflower for her girlfriend. Yes, they're a gay couple and I support them. ;w;)

The way Ruby and Sapphire talk while the officiant is talking was inspired by the Incredibles where Helen and Bob talk during their wedding ceremony.

Yes, there will be a non-smut honeymoon fic. It will be posted next month.

Also, this is completely optional, but if you like my work, you can buy me a coffee on ko-fi! (cap_cavern)
