Chapter 8

Final Task

Bodies hung upside down over a devil's trap that they were able to trap.

Sam wiped blood off of a large knife.

Castiel put a lid on a jug of blood.

Dean stood with Natasha nearby.

The four of them looked at one another before they left the building.

Sam and Cas carried gallon jugs of blood to the Impala and put them into the trunk.

Dean walked over to Bobby. "I still can't get used to you at eye level."

"So, was I right?" Bobby asked looking over at Dean.

"As always, Yoda. Two stunt demons inside, just like you said."

"Did you get it?"

"Yeah, all the "go juice" Sammy can drink." Dean said letting out a soft breath rubbing his mouth.

"You okay?"

"Not really. What do you got?"

"Not much. These look like omens to you?" He handed Dean a newspaper. "Cyclone in Florida, temperature drop in Detroit, wildfires in L.A."

"Wait. What about Detroit?"

"Temp's dropped about 20 degrees, but only in a five-block radius of downtown Motown."

"That's the one. Devil's in Detroit."

"Really? As far as foreboding goes, it's a little light in the loafers. You sure?"

"Yeah, I'm sure."

Natasha looked over at Dean, her brows furrowed in concern. She knew that Dean wasn't going to have an easy time with what was going to go down. But Sam had told them that he needed to put the Devil back into the cage.

Dean drove down the road with Sam riding shotgun, Castiel sound asleep next to Natasha who was wide awake looking out the window.

"Aw. Ain't he a little angel?" Dean mused with a smile looking back at the sleeping angel.

"Angels don't sleep." Sam pointed out looking over at his older brother.

Natasha let out a soft chuckle. "Well, then he's an odd angel, Sam."

"Sam, I got a bad feeling about this." Dean admitted softly to his younger brother and Natasha.

Natasha bit her lower lip softly. She had a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"Well, you'd be nuts to have a good feeling about it." Sam said letting out a breath rubbing his mouth softly.

"You know what I mean. Detroit. He always said he'd jump your bones in Detroit. Here we are."

"Here we are."

"Maybe this is him rolling out the red carpet, you know? Maybe he knows something that we don't."

"Dean, I'm sure he knows a buttload we don't. We just got to hope he doesn't know about the rings. Hey, um... on the subject, there's something I got to talk to you about." Sam said softly looking over at his brother.

"This thing goes our way and I...Triple Lindy into that box... y-you know I'm not coming back."

"Yeah, I'm aware."

"So you got to promise me something."

"Okay. Yeah. Anything."

"You got to promise not to try to bring me back."

"What? No, I didn't sign up for that."

"Dean -"

"Your Hell is gonna make my tour look like Graceland. You want me just to sit by and do nothing?"

"Once the Cage is shut, you can't go poking at it, Dean. It's too risky."

"No, no, no, no, no. As if I'm just gonna let you rot in there."

"Yeah, you are. You don't have a choice."

"You can't ask me to do this."

"I'm sorry, Dean. You have to."

"So then what am I supposed to do?"

"You go find Lisa. You pray to god she's dumb enough to take you in, and you – you have barbecues and go to football games. You go live some normal, apple-pie life, Dean. Promise me."

Natasha looked out the window pursing her lips together knowing that this wasn't good for Dean being told to go and live a normal life. It meant that she would return home and be with her mother and pretend that nothing had happened. Forget her life that she had with the two brothers and the angel. Her heart wrenched in her chest tightly knowing that this was the beginning of the end of the four of them.

Bobby walked over to Sam, Dean, Natasha, and Castiel. "Demons. At least two dozen of them. You were right – something's up."

"More than something. He's here. I know it." Dean said walking over to the trunk of the Impala.

Sam looked over at Bobby.

"I'll see ya around, kid." Bobby said looking at the younger Winchester.

"See ya around." Sam said hugging Bobby knowing that this was the last time that he would see the man that he called his father figure.

"He gets in... You fight him tooth and nail, you understand? Keep swingin'. Don't give an inch."

"Yes, sir." Sam held his hand out to Castiel. "Take care of these guys, okay?"

Castiel tilted his head to the side. "That's not possible."

"Then humor me."

"Oh. I was supposed to lie. Uh... Sure. They'll be fine."

"Just – just stop... talking." Sam said, letting out a breath. He walked over to the trunk of the Impala where the open jugs of demon blood sat. "You mind not watching this?"

Dean walked away walking over to Natahsa leaning against the car. He looked over at the young woman wondering why she was so gung ho on helping them out by going inside with them. "You know you don't have to do this… go inside with us."

Natasha looked over at Dean. "I told you."

Dean let out a breath. "You're stubborn, you know that?"

Natasha let out a soft laugh. "My mom has told me that countless times and so have you and your brother." She shrugged her head. "I like helping where I can." She turned her head when she heard Sam clearing his throat and closing the trunk.

Sam took a deep breath. "Okay. Let's go." Sam said as he walked past Dean and Natasha. The two of them followed him slowly, Castiel and Bobby watched them go.

Sam raised his arms as he approached the building with the demons inside of it with Dean and Natasha right behind him. "All right! We're here, you sons of bitches! Come and get it!"

Two demons came outside looking at the three of them.

"Hey, guys. Is your father home?" Dean said, narrowing his eyes at the two demons.

They escorted them in by manhandling them inside of the building leading them right to Lucifer.

Natasha bit her lip nervously as she looked at the man that was causing so many problems.

"Hey, guys. So nice of you to drop in." Lucifer breathed on the window pane and drew a pitchfork in the condensation. "Sorry if it's a bit chilly. Most people think I burn hot. It's actually quite the opposite."

"Well, I'll alert the media." Dean said, letting out a scoff.

Lucifer turned revealing his face was covered with red sores. "Help me understand something, guys. I mean, stomping through my front door is... a tad suicidal, don't you think?"

"We're not here to fight you." Sam said, shaking his head.

"No? Then why are you?"

"I want to say "yes.""

Lucifer's brow raised. "Excuse me?"

Sam took a breath and closed his eyes and the two demons dropped dead in flashes of light.

"Chock-full of Ovaltine, are we?"

"You heard me. Yes."

"You're serious."

"Look, Judgment Day's a runaway train. We get it now. We just want off."

"Deal of the century. I give you a free ride, but when it's all over, I live, he lives, you bring our parents back -"

"Okay, can we please drop the telenovela? I know you have the rings, Sam."

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"The Horsemen's rings? The magic keys to my Cage? Ring a bell? Come on, Sam. I've never lied to you. You could at least pay me the same respect. It's okay. I'm not mad. A wrestling match inside your noggin... I like the idea. Just you and me, one round, no tricks. You win, you jump in the hole. I win... Well, then I win. What do you say, Sam? A fiddle of gold against your soul says I'm better than you."

"So he knows. Doesn't change anything."

"Sam." Dean said softly.

"We don't have any other choice." Sam said, shaking his head looking at his brother.

Lucifer closed his eyes and a bright light emanated from him.

Dean looked around concerned seeing Sam motionless on the floor. He takes the horsemen's rings out of his pocket and throws them at the wall. "Bvtmon...Tabges...Babalon."

A hole appears in the wall where the rings were. Air began to be sucked into it.

Sam slowly stirred.

Dean quickly went to Sam. "Sammy!"

Sam groaned. "I can feel him. Oh, god!"

"You got to go now! Come on!" He helps Sam up to his feet. "Go now, Sammy. Now!"

Sam walked towards the hole and took some deep breaths. He then smiles and turns back to Dean. "I was just messing with you. Sammy's long gone." Lucifer said as he turned back to the hole in the wall. "Chdr bvtmon tabges babalon." The hole closed and Lucifer removed the rings from the wall. "I told you... this would always happen in Detroit." Lucifer suddenly grabbed Natasha before disappearing.

Dean put his hands to his head with tears in his eyes.

Five people stood in a loose circle.

Lucifer flexed Sam's right arm, shoulder, and hand. He looked over at the woman he held onto next to him. He closed his eyes. "Sam. Come on. I can feel you... scratching away in there."He looks in a mirror. "Look... I'll take the gag off, okay? You got me all wrong, kiddo. I'm not the bad guy here."

Natasha looked up at the mirror seeing Sam inside of it. Her eyes widened in fear, her heart pounded in her chest.

"I'm gonna rip you apart from the inside out. Do you understand me?" Sam snarled as he looked at Lucifer in anger.

"Such anger... Young Skywalker. Who are you really angry with? Me? Or that face in the mirror?" Lucifer taunted Sam with a smile.

"I'm sure this is all a big joke to you, huh?"

"Not at all. I've been waiting for you... for a long, long time. Come on, Sam. You have to admit – you can feel it, right?"

"The exhilaration. And you know why that is? Because we're two halves made whole. M.F.E.O. Literally."

"This feels pretty damn far from good."

"I'm inside your grapefruit, Sam. You can't lie to me. I see it all – how odd you always felt, how... out of place in that... family of yours. And why shouldn't you have? They were foster care – at best. I'm your real family."

"No, that's not true."

"It is. And I know you know it. All those times you ran away, you weren't running from them. You were running towards me. This doesn't have to be a bad thing, you know. I let Dean live, didn't I? I want him to live. I'll bring your folks back, too. I want you to be happy, Sam."

"I don't want anything from you."

"Really? Not even a little payback?"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Look closely. None of these little devils look familiar to you?"

"That's Mr. Bensman... One of my grade-school teachers."

"And that's your friend Doug from that time in East Lansing. And Rachel... your prom date. Sam Winchester, this is your life. Azazel's gang – watching you since you were a rugrat, jerking you around like a dog on a leash. I know how you feel about them. Me too. So, what do you say you and I blow off a little steam?"

Natasha swallowed the lump in her throat. She couldn't help but wonder why Lucifer wanted to keep her there. She didn't think that she was important to be taken away from Dean. Her thoughts went back to the older Winchester. She wondered if Dean was looking for Sam and her. She closed her eyes as she lowered her head sadly.

Bobby and Dean were watching the television inside of a store window.

"Reports are flooding in… a 7.6 earthquake in Portland, 8.1 in Boston, more in Hong Kong, Berlin, and Tehran. The U.S.G.S. has no explanation, but says to expect a six-figure death toll."

"It's starting." Castiel said softly pursing his lips together.

"Yeah, you think, genius?" Dean snapped as he looked over at Castiel.

"You don't have to be mean."

"So what do we do now?"

"I suggest we imbibe copious quantities of alcohol... Just wait for the inevitable blast wave."

"Yeah, swell. Thank you, Bukowski. I-I mean, how do we stop it?" Dean said, letting out a soft breath.

"We don't. Lucifer will meet Michael on the chosen field, and the battle of Armageddon begins."

"Okay, well, where's this chosen field?"

"I don't know."

"Well, there's got to be something that we can do. He has Natasha as a hostage." Dean said, letting out another breath rubbing his mouth softly.

"I'm sorry, Dean. This is over."

"You listen to me, you junkless sissy – we are not giving up! Bobby? Bobby?"

"There was never much hope to begin with. I don't know what to do." Bobby said, letting out a soft breath. "Sheriff Mills won't forgive us for losing her daughter."

Dean pursed his lips together knowing that it was bad knowing that Jody would find out soon enough that she was missing.

Lucifer sat on the steps with Natasha close to him, shaking in fear.

Natasha looked at the five dead bodys as her body continued to shake. Tears slid down her cheeks as the echoes of their screams filled her head.

Lucifer exhaled sharply. "So... are we having fun yet?" He said looking over at Natasha with a sickening look on his face.

Natasha swallowed the lump in her throat, her heart rammed in her chest.

Lucifer stood in the cemetery with Natasha next to him. He heard the fluttering of wings of Michael showing up. "It's good to see you, Michael."

Michael tisked as he looked at his brother. "You too. It's been too long. Can you believe it's finally here?"

"No. Not really." Lucifer said looking over at Michael.

"Are you ready?"

"As I'll ever be. A part of me wishes we didn't have to do this."

"Yeah. Me too."

"Then why are we?"

"Oh, you know why! I have no choice, after what you did."

"What I did? What if it's not my fault?"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"Think about it. Dad made everything. Which means he made me who I am! God wanted the Devil."

"So why? And why make us fight? I just can't figure out the point."

"What's your point?"

"We're going to kill each other. And for what? One of Dad's tests. And we don't even know the answer. We're brothers. Let's just walk off the chessboard."

"I'm sorry. I-I can't do that. I'm a good son, and I have my orders."

"But you don't have to follow them."

"What, you think I'm gonna rebel? Now? I'm not like you. And you take a poor innocent woman to what try to make something out of her?" Michael questioned narrowing his eyes as the young woman that stood next to Lucifer. He could see that she was very afraid and he didn't blame her.

"Please, Michael -"

"You know, you haven't changed a bit, little brother. Always blaming everybody but yourself. We were together. We were happy. But you betrayed me – all of us – and you made our father leave."

"No one makes Dad do anything. He is doing this to us." Lucifer said, letting out a breath.

"You're a monster, Lucifer. And I have to kill you."

"If that's the way it's got to be... Then I'd like to see you try."

The two of them circled one another agitation on their faces.

Natasha turned her head and saw Dean's car coming into the graveyard. Her eyes widened as her heart pounded in her chest in fear. What was he doing here? She had seen enough death on her hands and this... seeing another person die, she couldn't do that. She couldn't see the deaths of Dean, Bobby, or Cas.

Dean drove up to both Lucifer and Michael. He gets out of the car. "Howdy, boys. Sorry. Am I interrupting something?" Dean looked at Lucifer.

Natasha looked at Dean with wide eyes. What on earth was he trying to do.

"Hey. We need to talk."

"Dean. Even for you, this is a whole new mountain of stupid." Lucifer drawled as he looked at Dean.

"I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to Sam."

"You're no longer the vessel, Dean. You got no right to be here." Michael said looking at Dean.

"Adam, if you're in there somewhere, I am so sorry." Dean said softly, feeling bad that Adam was brought into this.

Michael let out a scoff. "Adam isn't home right now."

"Well, then you're next on my list, buttercup. But right now, I need five minutes with him."

"You little maggot. You are no longer a part of this story!"

"Hey, ass-butt!" Castiel yelled holding a bottle that had a flame burning in it. He threw the bottle at Adam who screamed as he went up in flames.

""Ass-butt"?" Dean questioned looking over at Castiel.

"He'll be back – and upset – but you got your five minutes."

Lucifer looked over at Castiel. "Castiel. Did you just Molotov my brother with holy fire?"

"Uh... no."

"No one dicks with Michael but me." Lucifer snapped his fingers and Castiel exploded in a rain of blood and chunks of meat.

Natasha gagged looking down with tears in her eyes. She covered her mouth trying to keep herself from screaming.

"Sammy, can you hear me?" Dean questioned pleading hoping that his brother would be able to hear him and break out of the hold that Lucifer had on him.

"You know... I tried to be nice... for Sammy's sake. But you... are such a pain... in my ass." Lucifer said, throwing Dean onto the windshield of the Impala, which shattered.

Bobby shot Lucifer in the back causing him to turn. Bobby shot him again in the front this time.

Lucifer made a twisting motion with his hand and Bobby's neck snapped.

Natasha let out a shriek in shock, tears fell down her cheeks.

"N-o-o-o-o!" Dean yelled tears coming to his eyes.

"Yes." Lucifer grabbed Dean's legs and pulled him off the hood of the Impala. He punched Dean hard causing him to fall back against the Impala spitting up blood.

"Sammy? Are you in there?"

"Oh, he's in here, all right." He punched Dean again hard. "And he's gonna feel the snap of your bones." He punched him again causing Dean to fall to the ground. "Every single one." He hauled Dean to his feet. "We're gonna take our time." He continued to punch Dean 10 more times.

Dean's face was very swollen and bleeding, He put a hand out to Lucifer's jacket. "Sam, it's okay. It's okay. I'm here. I'm here. I'm not gonna leave you."

Lucifer punched him two times more.

"I'm not gonna leave you."

Lucifer drew his hand back for another punch. He stared for a few moments.

Suddenly his fist unclenched it. Sam finally regained control. He released Dean, who fell to the ground against the Impala.

Natasha moved towards where Dean was, tears falling down her cheeks.

"It's okay, Dean. It's gonna be okay. I've got him." Sam said looking at his brother and Natasha. Tears came to his eyes as he looked at Natasha before taking the horsemen's rings out of his pocket and tossed them onto the ground. "Bvtmon tabges babalon."

The ground caved in around the rings and the air is sucked into the hole.

The brothers stared at one another as the hole widened.

Sam breathed in deeply.

"Sam! It's not gonna end this way! Step back!" Michael said, calling him, making him turn his head.

"You're gonna have to make me!" Sam snapped as his eyes narrowed as he looked at Michael.

"I have to fight my brother, Sam! Here and now! It's my destiny!"

Sam looked at Dean and Natasha before spreading his arms.

Micheal lunged forward and grabbed Sam's jacket.

Sam grabbed Michael's arm as they fell together into the old.

After a few moments the hole closes in a blinding flash of light. The horsemen's rings burned bright in the grass on the ground where the hole once was.

Dean closed his eyes leaning against the Impala.

Natasha put her hand on his arm weakly knowing that this wasn't a good sign and this was the only way to end everything and save the world. Her heart pounded in her chest as she slumped back against the Impala as well.

Dean shifted his weight to kneel on the ground next to the Impala.

Cas suddenly appeared next to him.

"Cas, you're alive?" Dean asked looking up through swollen eyes.

"I'm better than that." Castiel said as he touched Dean's forehead and his wounds healed.

Dean got up to his feet shakily.

Natasha got up to her feet worrying her lower lip between her teeth.

"Cas, are you God?" Dean asked softly.

"That's a nice compliment. But no. Although, I do believe he brought me back. New and improved." Castiel said as he walked over to Bobby and touched him on the forehead, resurrecting him.

Dean looked down at the horsemen's rings that he had picked up.

Natasha looked at Dean with a worried gaze. She knew that this was the last time that she would see Dean most likely. He would move on and that meant that she would have to move on as well.

Natasha rested her head against the door as the Impala went down the road with Dean behind the wheel and Cas next to him.

"What are you gonna do now?" Dean asked Cas as he looked over at the angel.

"Return to Heaven, I suppose." Cas said, pursing his lips in thought.

"With Michael in the Cage, I'm sure it's total anarchy up there." Castiel explained to them.

"So, what, you're the new sheriff in town?"

"I like that. Yeah. I suppose I am." Castiel said with a smile

Natasha let out a soft chuckle.

"Wow. God gives you a brand-new, shiny set of wings, and suddenly you're his bitch again." Dean said, shaking his head letting out a soft scoff.

"I don't know what God wants. I don't know if he'll even return. It just... seems like the right thing to do."

"Well, if you do see him, you tell him I'm coming for him next."

"You're angry." Cas said softly looking over at Dean.

"That's an understatement."

"He helped. Maybe even more than we realize."

"That's easy for you to say. He brought you back. But what about Sam? What about me, huh? Where's my grand prize? All I got is my brother in a hole!"

"You got what you asked for, Dean. No paradise. No hell. Just more of the same. I mean it, Dean. What would you rather have? Peace or freedom?"

Dean looked over and Cas was gone. "Well, you really suck at goodbyes, you know that?"

Natasha let out a breath. "Did you expect anything more out of him?" She asked softly.

Dean looked back at her, his brows furrowing some.

"He's an angel and from what I gathered of being around him, he doesn't understand the meanings of goodbyes I don't think." She let out a soft breath. "After all he's not like us. He's not human…"

Dean let out a breath knowing that she was right. Angels knew jack about how to be human. What hurt the most was knowing that he needed to leave and become a normal average Joe working and not hunting. Missing his brother and Cas, but to top it all off he was going to have to leave Natasha behind to have a normal life as well. He couldn't help but wonder what she was going to do next.

Dean, Bobby and Natasha stood near the Impala.

Bobby pulled Dean into a hug before Dean got into the car and drove away leaving him and Natasha standing alone. Bobby looked over at Natasha. "So what are you going to do?"

Natasha put her hands in her pockets pursing her lips together in thought. She looked at Bobby letting out a soft breath."Honestly Bobby, I have no idea. Probably go back to my mom's and go back to college." She shrugged, closing her eyes in thought. "But I think I'll stick around here for a while. I mean I have nothing really to go back to in college life."

Bobby nodded his head knowing that was very true. Once you became a hunter it was hard to shake off. Bobby put his hand on her shoulder.

Natasha looked up at Bobby. "Bobby?"

"Whatever you do in life kid, you'll do just fine." He said with a small smile patting her shoulder. "Just don't be a stranger."

Natasha gave Bobby a small smile and nodded her head. "Alright." She said softly, she knew that there was no way that she would be able to forget Bobby.
