Chapter Forty Four
After giving Ash a proper funeral, Ellen stuck around for a bit. Even Jo had managed to come by for the funeral after Ruby got into contact with her. It made Ruby happy to know that at least both of the Harvelle women were safe. That bit of happiness didn't stop her from giving Dean the cold shoulder though. It didn't go unnoticed by anyone currently in the Singer house. Especially Ellen who chose to take the younger woman aside and talk to her.
"Now hon, you have every right to be mad at what Dean did, but take it from me, you don't want to end up regretting not getting to talk to him." Ellen pointed out gently.
The blonde sighed shaking her head. "I know. I've just been dealing with so much emotional whiplash lately. Sam vanishes and I nearly get killed. Ash dies and I thought you were dead too until I found out you were alive. We find Sam only for him to get killed right in front of us. I have to come to terms with his death, but then suddenly he is alive again. It's all just been so damn much."
"Yeah I know, sweetheart. I'm sorry that you've had to deal with all of that. It's fine if you need some space or time. I just don't want you to have any regrets either." The older woman assured her.
Ruby bit her lip then sighed. "I'll think about it. I promise."
Unfortunately for Ruby, it wasn't long before the boys hit the road to go hunting again. She caved a day or so later then drove out to meet up with them. Knowing they needed to talk, Sam sat in the Impala looking through some books trying to find a way to free Dean from his deal. The pair were inside the motel room with an awkward tension between them.
It was the blonde that chose to speak up first. "So did you even think about me once when you decided to make that deal?"
"All I think about is you, Ruby. Look the last thing I wanted was to upset you, but I couldn't leave him like that. It wasn't right." He admitted with a sigh.
Ruby shook her head scoffing at him. "God, you are so hypocritical! After you found out what John did to save you, all you would bitch about was that what is dead should stay dead and you were so angry. Then you turn around and do the same thing to Sam."
"I know. I just... I couldn't not try to save Sam."
She sighed softly. "I want to be mad at you, but I really can't because I would have done the same thing if I had thought about it. You know it's not fair. You guys finally got rid of the thing that killed your Mom and Jess. You should be able to do whatever you want with your lives now, but it's like no we still have to gank the demons that came out of the gate."
"Yeah it sucks, but hey we get rid of the demons then you guys can do whatever you want afterward." Dean stroked her face gently.
Her blue eyes teared up a bit. "Don't say that. What we want is for you to be here. I love you, you idiot."
"I... I love you too." He wiped her tears away then leaned in kissing her softly.
Sam glanced up only to see the silhouette of the pair kissing. It made him smile and he was glad that they were on the road to making up at least. It was a little while later that he received a call from Bobby. The older man informed him of a possible demon sighting. After ending the call, Sam reluctantly got out of the car and opened the door to the motel room.
"Dean, we've got a... oh god!" He immediately closed his eyes and shut the door returning to the Impala.
Ruby smiled at him sheepishly a short while later after the pair made it outside fully dressed. "Sorry Sammy."
"Uh it's alright. So what I was trying to say is that Bobby called. He told me about a possible demon sighting. The only signs are a cicada swarm and crop failure. It's our only lead though." He shrugged his shoulders.
She nodded her head in understanding. "Then go. I'm going to head back to my dad's and help him."
"Alright." Dean kissed her and then smiled softly.
Ruby kissed him back and couldn't help giggling a bit. "Be safe okay? Don't do anything else stupid."
"I'll be safe. Love you." He watched her walk over to her car.
She smiled brightly at him. "Love you too."
"So you crazy kids finally did it, huh?" Sam chuckled when Dean got back into the Impala.
"Uh yeah I guess we did." He shrugged grinning softly as he started the car.
"Well I'm happy for you guys."
Just outside Lincoln, Nebraska, the boys pulled up near a house. There were no signs of any wrongdoing on the outside. They got out and walked up to the house only to see that Bobby was already there with Ruby in tow. The four of them went inside of the house only to be met by an awful stench. There were three dead bodies in the living room, but no signs of sulfur or anything demonic around the house. They didn't understand it at all. Two other people suddenly appeared pointing their guns, but they just as quickly lowered them when they recognized Bobby.
Bobby held his hands up in an attempt to calm the situation. "Guys, this is Isaac and his wife Tamara. They're hunters that I've known for a long time. These two guys are Sam and Dean Winchester. The blonde is my daughter Ruby."
Tamara smiled at them then looked at the blonde. "It's nice to meet you. Why Ruby, we haven't seen you since you were little."
Ruby gave her a confused look. "I'm sorry, but I just don't remember you."
Her father gave her a reassuring look. "It's alright. You couldn't have been more than seven years old. They stopped by just after a hunt. I helped them fix their car up."
The older woman nodded her head. "Well there is nothing else to really find here. Why don't we all go back to our house and try to make some sense of this?"
Of course the Winchesters trusted Bobby so they followed his lead. He seemed to think it was a good idea so they all left the house. Sam made an anonymous call to the cops. They watched from afar as the cops showed up along with the coroner. The hunters then made their way over to Tamara and Isaac's house. It was Dean who later on called the coroner to find out the cause of death which ended up being quite surprising.
"Starvation and dehydration. All three of them. It makes no sense. The fridge was fully stocked and not even that far from where they were sitting." He shook his head after hanging up the phone.
"You're right it doesn't and we wouldn't even be in this mess if you fools didn't let those demons out." Isaac spoke up.
Her blue eyes narrowed in annoyance. "Excuse me? They didn't let the demons out. Someone else did that. They did their best to deal with the situation. It's not their fault."
Bobby gave the boys a look and they nodded their heads taking Ruby outside to cool off. "She's very protective of them. My daughter is right though. It wasn't their fault the gate was opened and the demons were released. They were trying their best to stop it."
Tamara sighed letting her husband cool off as well. "We know. He's just frustrated at the mess it has caused."
Outside, Ruby let out a frustrated sigh. "It really wasn't your fault. You guys did everything you could to stop it."
"Not everything, Ruby. If I had shot the demon when it had possessed Dad, none of this would have happened." Sam frowned.
The blonde softened a bit toward him. "No, you can't think like that. If I had been in your position, I never would have shot my father either. Besides even if you did gank the demon back then, who is to say that another demon wouldn't have finished what he started?"
"Sam, it's not your fault. As much as Dad wanted to gank the yellow eyed demon, he wouldn't want it at the cost of you feeling guilty for the rest of your life." Dean assured his brother.
Bobby stepped out of the house just then in a suit and sighed. "We've got another one. Young woman in the parking lot of a shopping center."
"Alright. Are Tamara and Issac joining us?" Sam asked.
The older man shook his head. "No. Let's get a move on."
Ruby got into her father's truck while the boys climbed into the Impala. They stopped to check into a motel which let Ruby and the boys change as well. Bobby then led the way over to one of the shopping centers in town. They posed as detectives and began to investigate. The security camera footage showed a man whisper to one woman then she walked over to another woman only to fight over a pair of shoes. One of them ended up buying the shoes and leaving the store. The other woman followed her out to the parking lot. The store's exterior camera footage showed the one woman brutally attack the woman who bought the shoes to the point that she killed her. The four hunters stepped outside the store to discuss their findings.
It was Bobby who figured it out first. "I think I know what we're dealing with here. It's not just any demons. It's the Seven Deadly Sins. They're nasty sons of bitches."
"The Seven Deadly Sins? Gluttony, Sloth, Envy, Pride, Greed, Wrath, and Lust? They are demons and not just sins?" Sam asked clearly surprised by that.
Ruby thought about it for a moment then nodded her head in agreement. "The first victims definitely could have been affected by Sloth. They just stayed sitting there despite a fridge full of food a few feet away. Then you have what happened here in the parking lot. That could definitely be Envy."
"So that leaves five sins left unaccounted for." The older Winchester pointed out.
Bobby nodded his head. "I think I know where to start. On the security camera footage, moments before the woman got envious, this man approached her whispering something in her ear. Then she made a beeline for the victim."
"So if we find him, maybe we can find the other sins too." Sam suggested.
Tamara and Isaac had a similar lead. They were able to find out the guy's identity and followed him to a bar. It was somewhat busy, but they were prepared. At least they thought they were. Everyone's eyes in the bar suddenly turned black and the married hunters suddenly knew they were surrounded by demons. They tried to fight off the demons, but it was no use. The demons separated them making Tamara watch helplessly as they poured drain cleaner down Isaac's throat. Before they could physically harm Tamara, the revving of an engine was heard then suddenly a truck plowed right into the bar. Bobby, Ruby, and the Winchesters rushed in with weapons taking out as many demons as they could. Isaac was lifeless on the ground while his wife was in a mixture of anger and shock. The hunters ushered her out of there along with Walter Rosen, the man possessed by one of the Seven Deadly Sins, and drove back to her house. They tied Walter up leaving him in a Devil's Trap. He wasn't giving them any useful information no matter what they tried so they gave Tamara the honor of exorcising him. When she was done, there was a frantic knock at the front door.
"Tamara, baby, it's me. You gotta let me in." Isaac could be heard from outside.
Her anger got the best of her as she flung the door open and tackled him to the ground staking him with a wooden stake. "You're not Isaac."
Tamara exorcised the demon from her late husband's body while the rest of the demons entered the house. The demon of Sloth headed toward Bobby only to fall victim to the Devil's trap. He wasted little time exorcising the demon. The demon of Lust targeted Dean which only pissed off Ruby. She pulled the woman away from him and shoved her head first into the tub full of Holy water. Snapping out of it, Dean recited the words to exorcise the demon. In another room, the remaining three sins attacked Sam who was outnumbered after failing to lure them into a Devil's trap. Out of nowhere, a woman appeared and attacked the demons with a knife. It killed two of them which shocked Sam though he helped her gank the third one.
"Who are you?" He gave her a confused look.
"I'm the girl who just saved your ass." The blonde smirked at them then turned around walking away.
The next morning was somber as Tamara stood silently near the funeral pyre for her husband. The boys were salting and burning the bodies of the people the Sins had possessed. The woman possessed by Lust and the man possessed by Sloth had actually survived the exorcisms though they'd probably need some therapy going forward. Bobby showed up with Ruby and Sam filled the hunters in on the mystery girl who had saved him.
"Bobby, that knife... what kind of blade can kill a demon?" Sam asked curiously after the fires had burned out.
The older man sighed. "I have no idea. Yesterday I would have said there was no such thing."
"I'm just going to ask again. Who was that masked chick? Actually wait, even more troubling, how come a girl can fight better than you?" Dean smirked.
"Three demons, Dean, at once." Sam chuckled.
"Yeah whatever helps you sleep at night, buddy." He slapped Sam's shoulder playfully.
Ruby bit her lip ignoring their antics as she focused on Tamara. "Are you going to be alright? You're more than welcome to stay in our home for as long as you need."
Tamara gave her a gentle smile. "Eventually. I appreciate that, sweetheart, but I think I need to be on my own for now. I'll see you guys around."
Bobby watched her walk over to her car. "Tamara? The world just got a lot scarier. Be careful."
She nodded her head as she got into the car. "You too. Hey Ruby? Don't let this discourage you. It's obvious you love the knucklehead. Hold onto that."
The blonde smiled softly at her. "I will."
They watched her drive off then Bobby looked at them. "Keep an eye out for omens. I'll do the same."
"You got it." Dean smiled at him.
Ruby gave her dad a hug and then sighed. "Just be careful. I can't lose you too."
Bobby returned the hug smiling softly. "Always am, sweetheart. You won't lose me."
She pulled away and turned toward the Winchesters. "Do you mind if I tag along with you guys?"
"Of course not, Ruby. You're always welcome." Sam smiled at her.
"We wouldn't want it any other way." Den agreed with a grin.
Her face lit up and she followed them to the Impala getting in.
"So where to?" Dean asked after they stopped for gas.
"Uh, I don't know. I was thinking Louisiana maybe. I was talking to Tamara earlier and she mentioned this hoodoo priestess outside of Shreveport that might be able to help us out. You know, with your demon deal." Sam explained.
"Nah." He shook his head.
"What do you mean nah?"
"Sam, no hoodoo spell is going to break this deal, alright? It's a goose chase." Dean rolled his eyes.
Ruby rubbed her temples as they went back and forth. "I've tried already, Sam. It's no use."
"Yeah, well, I've been busting my ass trying to keep Dean alive and he acts like he couldn't care less. What, you got some kind of death wish or something?" He looked at his older brother in disbelief.
"No it's not like that." Dean sighed.
"Then what's it like, Dean? Please just tell me."
She reached out giving his hand a reassuring squeeze. "It's alright, Dean."
"That's just it, Sam. We trap the crossroads demon, try to trick it, or try to weasel our way out of the deal in any way? You die. Okay? You die. Those are the terms of the deal. There is no way out of this deal. You try to find one and so help me god, I'm going to stop you." Dean finally admitted.
"How could you make that deal, Dean?" Sam sighed.
Ruby settled into the backseat of the Impala. "The same reason you dragged him all the way to that faith healer. Dean has a year left to live. Do you really want to spend that time arguing about him being a hypocrite and how you want to save him?"
"She's right, you know. You're alive. I feel good for the first time in a long time. I'd like to make the most of the year I have left. So what do you say we kill some evil sons of bitches and we raise a little hell, huh?" Dean chuckled softly as he got back into the car.
"You're unbelievable." Sam chuckled as he settled into the passenger seat.
"Very true." He smirked and winked at Ruby.
