Chapter Forty One

It was a few days after they fled from Little Rock when they finally took up another hunt. This time it was in Joliet, Illinois. Deciding it might be easier to keep the authorities off their trail if they switched it up a bit, Dean went with Ruby to look into the latest missing person that they believed was tied to their current case while Sam stayed behind in the motel doing research. It was Sam who called them and Ruby answered putting it on speaker.

"It's like we thought. Nothing is tying the missing people together aside from, you know, being missing." Dean filled his younger brother in.

"Good to know. Uh, there's a cop car outside." Sam kept his voice low as he peeked through the window curtain discreetly.

Ruby frowned at that. "Do you think that they are there for you guys?"

"I don't know. Maybe." He sighed.

"Dude, I don't see how that is possible. We ditched the plates and the credit cards. They've got nothing." Dean shrugged his shoulders as he drove down the road.

"They're leaving. False alarm." Sam breathed out sighing in relief.

"See? Told you it was nothing to worry about."

"Yeah because being fugitives is a freaking dance party." He scoffed rolling his eyes.

"Hey man, chicks dig the danger vibe." Dean winked at Ruby.

She laughed softly at that. "Yeah maybe."

"So did you guys get anything else?" Sam stood in front of a bunch of books with John's journal open on top of them.

"Are you kidding me? How could we? You got us sifting through fifty square miles of real estate out here."

"Well that is where all of the victims disappeared." Sam pointed out.

Ruby shook her head. "Did you find anything, Sam?"

"Actually yeah I did. One thing anyway. I'm pretty sure of it now. We're hunting a Djinn."

"A freaking genie?" A look of disbelief crossed Dean's face.

"Yeah. I guess they're powerful enough. They've been feeding off of people for centuries."

The blonde considered that for a moment then bit her lip. "Alright, we're hunting a Djinn. So how do we find it?"

"Djinn can usually be found in ruins. The bigger the better. It gives them more places to hide." He told them.

"You know, I think we saw a place a couple of miles back. We're going to go check it out." Dean began to drive in that direction.

"Wait, no, no, no, no, no. Come pick me up first." Sam pleaded with him.

"Nah, I'm sure it's nothing. I just want to take a look around." He assured his brother and reached over hanging up.

Ruby shot him a look. "Really Dean? It wouldn't have hurt to have Sam as back up."

"It'll be fine. We've got the silver knives and the lamb's blood." He assured her as he continued to drive.

She rolled her eyes as they pulled up to a large abandoned factory. "If you say so."

Dean parked the car and the two of them got out retrieving the knives from the trunk. After dipping them in the lamb's blood, the two hunters found a way into the building and carefully opened the door which made a loud creaky sound. They walked into the factory finding themselves in what once was apparently an office. Typewriters, file cabinets, and other office items were scattered around the area. The sound of dripping water caught their attention, but they weren't sure where it was coming from. The two hunters walked through the room and out another door into a hallway. Dean shined his flashlight around giving them a better look of the area. They looked further down the hall then turned around heading the opposite way down the hall. Suddenly Dean was shoved into the wall. His flashlight fell from his hand clattering onto the ground then the knife was forcefully knocked from his hand as well. Ruby stood frozen in awe as the Djinn's eyes and hand began to light up in a blue glow. It was bald with curly blue tattoos all over its face. Her eyes widened as the Djinn's glowing left hand was placed against Dean's forehead making his eyes roll back and glow a faint blue as well. Right as it let go of Dean a moment later, she moved to stab it, but it turned quickly and stopped her. She froze as it repeated the same process with her.

His green eyes fluttered open and he sat up after a few moments. A movie was playing on the tv and he was in a bedroom that he didn't recognize. A bed that he had never been in before. Dean glanced beside him and a sigh of relief fell from his lips when he saw that Ruby was safe beside him. He pressed a kiss to her head then slid out of the bed moving to get dressed. Dean left the room unsure of where they were exactly, but he found his way to the living room. There was a small stack of mail with a letter addressed to a Ruby Winchester on top. It made Dean smile a bit though he was still confused as to what was going on.

"Wait, Lawrence? What the hell are we doing back in Kansas?" He wondered aloud as he noticed the address on the envelope.

A shriek was then heard before Ruby wandered out there a few moments later. "What the hell is going on?"

"I have no idea. Are you alright?" Dean looked her over with concern in his eyes.

She rolled her eyes before opening her robe revealing what had startled her. "No I'm not fine. I'm pregnant."

"I.. what? Wow." He walked over in shock placing his hand on her growing bump gently.

Ruby softened a bit. "This isn't possible. We were just in a factory in Joliet looking for the Djinn."

"I know. We'll figure it out. I promise." Dean assured her.

She nodded her head then pulled away moving to look at some of the framed photos that were displayed. "Hey we look cute. Oh there's Sam. Wait. No freaking way."

"What? Oh my god." He picked up one of the photos staring at it in disbelief before it slipped from his hands.

Ruby watched the glass smash as the framed picture landed on the floor. "Go. I'll be fine."

"I.. alright." Dean kissed her then grabbed his keys leaving the house only to find the Impala waiting for him. "Oh Baby, am I glad to see you."

The blonde sighed carefully cleaning up the glass then set the picture aside. It was nighttime, but Dean didn't care as he drove through Lawrence heading toward an all too familiar address. He pulled to a stop a short time later in front of the house he once called home. Dean parked the car then headed up to the front door knocking on it several times. The door swung open and he looked at his mother in awe. Mary Winchester stood there looking alive and well. She was also a bit concerned as to why her eldest son was standing there so late at night.

"Uh hey mom. Sorry to wake you." His voice cracked as his green eyes shone with unshed tears that were on the verge of spilling.

"It's alright. Is everything okay? Is it Ruby and the baby?" Mary asked stepping aside to let him in.

"They're fine. Mom, what was it that you used to tell me when you tucked me in at night?" He asked turning to look at her once he was inside.

"You came over at this time just to ask me that?" She shut the front door and looked at him in disbelief.

"Mom, please, just answer the question."

"I used to tell you that angels were watching over you." Mary looked at her son confused.

"I don't believe it." He breathed out then stepped forward pulling her into a hug.

"Honey, you're scaring me." She returned the hug even more confused.

"Oh, uh, sorry. I'm just really happy to see you." Dean pulled away then looked around. "Hey when I was young, was there a fire here?"

"No never."

"Huh. I thought there was." He gazes at several different pictures of himself, Sam, John, and Mary only to stop when he saw one of his father in a softball uniform.

"He loved that stupid team." Mary shook her head smiling sadly at him.

"Dad's dead? I mean, yeah he did."

"He died in his sleep from a stroke. You know that. You've been drinking again haven't you?" She folded her arms across her chest.

"What? No I haven't. I drove over here, Mom. I wouldn't do that drunk. Not when Ruby's, you know, pregnant." Dean assured her.

"I'm just going to call Ruby and have her pick you up."

"No, no. She shouldn't be driving this late in her condition. I'll just let her know I'm staying the night." He pointed out.

"Well alright." Mary relented watching him walk over to the couch.

"Okay." Dean sat down on the couch and sighed.

"Are you sure that you're alright?" She walked over and stroked his face tenderly.

"I think so." He leaned into her touch.

"Okay." Mary bent down pressing a kiss to his forehead. "I love you."

"Me too." He smiled watching her leave before calling Ruby.

The blonde was sprawled out on their bed having finally gotten comfortable again. "Hello?"

"Hey it's Dean. You okay?"

Ruby smiled softly at that. "Yeah I'm okay. We're okay. I feel like I should be asking you the same question."

"I don't know, Ruby. I feel like I'm in the damn Twilight Zone. There was never a fire. Dad died in his sleep from a stroke. Mom... she's real. Ruby, she's alive." Dean laid back on the couch keeping his voice low.

She bit her lip at that. "That's great. I think. I don't know. Look, regardless of whatever is going on, I think you should enjoy the extra time with your mom while you can. It may be bizarro world, but it's still your mom."

"Okay I'll try. At least I still have Baby outside. Get some sleep. We should probably try to contact Sam tomorrow."

Ruby smiled softly again. "Will do. Yeah that sounds like a great idea. I'm sure he can help us make some sense of all this."

"Look, there's not that many potential places where they could have looked. Dean said there was one. I'm sure we'll find them." Sam assured the older man.

Bobby huffed looking over at him. "We better or I will kill your brother if anything happens to my baby girl."

"Noted. Oh hey, there's an abandoned factory a couple of miles out. Depending where they were during the phone call, that might be our best bet." He pointed out.

He checked out the information then sighed. "Yeah looks about right for a Djinn lair. At least out here anyway. Anything else close to that size in the area?"

"Not really. It's the biggest building that is also close to where the victims disappeared." Sam said after checking the map.

Bobby nodded his head. "Well let's get going then. Faster we get there, the faster we can get Ruby and Dean out of there."

"Hello?"

"Sammy, thank god!" Dean sighed in relief.

"Sammy? You never call me that. Dean, have you been drinking?" Sam looked confused on the other end of the call as he sat with a law book in front of him.

"What? No. Of course I haven't. Look, we need to talk about the Djinn. I think something really weird happened."

"The Gin? God, you really are drunk." A sarcastic chuckle fell from his lips.

"The Djinn! I'm serious, Sam." Dean huffed at his younger brother.

"Go sleep it off. Give my love to Ruby. Bye Dean." He hung up the phone.

Ruby raised her brows at him. "Not our Sam then."

"Definitely not. He said to give his love to you though." Dean shrugged his shoulders as he hung up the phone.

She smiled softly at that. "Well there is still a little of our Sam in there then."

"Yeah. I think I'm going to go mow the lawn." He kissed her cheek then walked out of the house.

"He's mowing my lawn? Are you sure he's okay?" Mary looked surprised as she entered the living room.

Ruby smiled at her mother in law. "Yeah he's fine. I think the whole pregnancy is just finally hitting Dean and he's feeling a bit nostalgic."

"Ah right. I was so worried when he just showed up out of the blue last night. He looked like he had seen a ghost." The older blonde admitted as she sat down.

She bit her lip at that. "Oh he's fine. He just had a nightmare and wanted to check on you. I told him to just call you, but he needed to see you with his own eyes."

"Oh okay. You really have been a total blessing to Dean. My boys took it really hard when John passed. Sam had his girlfriend to lean on, but Dean just kind of spiraled. I was so worried about him, but you really stepped up and took care of him. I was so happy when he cleaned up his act and proposed to you. Now you guys are giving me my first grandbaby." Mary smiled softly at her.

Ruby blushed tucking her hair behind her ear. "Well that's what you do when you love someone."

"You should probably eat something. Let me go make some lunch." She patted Ruby's hand then stood up heading toward the kitchen.

The younger blonde's heart broke a short while later as she watched Dean interact with his mother while he ate his sandwich though she tried her hardest not to show it. The fact that this bizarro world's Sam wasn't their Sam only made her relieved because she knew that meant he was safe from the Djinn. At least she hoped that was what it meant.

Bobby sighed in relief when he saw the Impala parked outside of the abandoned factory. "Well at least we know that we're in the right place."

"Thank goodness." Sam checked the car then looked around. "I think they went in through here."

He nodded his head walking with the younger man toward the partially open door. "They should hopefully still be alive. Djinn don't kill their victims right away."

"Yeah. I just hope they're okay." The door creaked as Sam opened it more and walked in.

There were no real signs of them in the room they entered though there was an open door at the other end of the room. "Looks like they might have went that way."

"Yeah. Oh! That's Dean's flashlight and their knives." The younger Winchester knelt down picking them up.

Bobby looked around feeling a bit more hopeful. "Well they've got to be around here somewhere."

"Well I questioned a local college professor, but he didn't tell me anything we didn't already know. Listen, you haven't um seen a girl who then disappears just as randomly as she appears, have you?" Dean asked as he entered the bedroom.

Ruby listened to him then walked out of the bathroom in a nice black dress. "Yeah I have. Do you think she's connected to the Djinn?"

"Maybe. Wow. You look incredible." He walked over and caressed her small baby bump.

Her heart swelled, but then reality came crashing back in. "Dean, this isn't real."

"I know, but it could be if we really wanted it."

She reached up caressing the side of his face gently. "Maybe in the future after the demon is dealt with and it's safer."

"Yeah." Dean smiled softly at her.

Ruby gave him a kiss and smiled. "Go get ready. We've got to head out for your mom's birthday dinner."

"Right." He reluctantly pulled away and moved to get ready.

They arrived back at the Winchester home not too long after that. Mary was dressed in a nice black dress as well. Ruby's face lit up when she finally saw Sam, but it was who he was with that caught both her and Dean off guard. Standing with Sam looking very much alive was Jessica herself. She teared up and pulled the younger woman into a hug before she could stop herself. Jessica looked confused, but hugged her back.

"Sorry. Pregnancy hormones. They've been making her emotional all day today for some reason." Dean explained covering for Ruby as he gently coaxed her away from the tall blonde.

Ruby composed herself then the five of them headed out to the nice local restaurant for Mary's birthday dinner. It was a pretty lovely time and then it happened. Jessica held out her left hand showing off her ring and they announced that they were engaged. It broke Ruby's heart though she tried not to show it. Dean looked happy for them. It was only a short while later that Dean and Ruby saw the mystery girl again. She walked off and Ruby went to follow her.

"She just went to the ladies room. I'll go make sure she's okay." Dean stood up.

"Dean..." Sam gave him a look.

"What? I'm not going in. I'll just stand outside and wait for her." He assured him and walked off.

When they got home, they changed into comfortable clothes and turned on the TV. There was a news report about the anniversary of a plane crash. A sick feeling came over the pair when they realized it was the plane they had prevented from crashing. Dean shut the TV off in disgust. Doing a little digging, Ruby was shocked to discover that everyone that they had saved were dead because they didn't save them in this world. He grabbed his car keys and left. Dean drove around for a bit until he found his way to the graveyard. He stopped in front of John's grave and gazed down at it.

"They're all dead. Everyone Sammy, Ruby, and I saved. They're dead and we're just supposed to live some apple pie life. There's this girl that apparently only Ruby and I can see. I feel like I'm going crazy. We know she's connected to the Djinn somehow. Just haven't figured it out yet. I know what you'd say too. Well not the softball coach version of you. The hunting one. You'd say go after the Djinn. If he can put you here then he can put you back. Your happiness for all those people's lives. No contest. Right? Why us? Huh? Why me? Why is it my job to save those people? Why do I have to be some kind of hero." Dean teared up as he talked to the grave. "What, mom's not supposed to live? Sammy's not supposed to be living his life happy and getting married? I'm not supposed to be happy with the girl I love? Yeah Dad, I love her. Why do we have to sacrifice everything, Dad? It's..."

He shook his head turning from the grave wiping his tears away. It was even later that night when Sam came downstairs in the Winchester home only to tussle with Dean in the dark. Ruby flicked on the light calling them both idiots then went right back to looking through Mary's box of silverware. Sam was confused yet angry at the same time.

"What the hell is going on?"

Ruby was calm as ever as she pulled out two silver knives then shut the box placing it back in the china cabinet where it belonged. "Nothing. Keep it down."

"Nothing? You break in and steal from our mother's silverware?" Sam looked at them in disbelief.

She rolled her eyes at him. "We didn't break in. She gave me a key. We're also not stealing. We're merely borrowing."

"Alright, look, Sam, calm down. Ruby is on a pregnancy superstition kick. One involves borrowing silverware and sleeping with it under your pillow." Dean smoothly covered for her.

The blonde smiled at the taller brother as she held up the knives. "They're nice and flat. Perfect for sleeping on."

"Right. I know it's your first pregnancy, but don't you think you're going a little overboard?" He raised his brows at her.

Ruby shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe a little. Alright look, I'll stop with the superstitions after this one. I promise. We'll bring them back tomorrow. I just didn't want Mary to think I'm crazy."

"I mean, you did marry Dean."

"Very funny, Sam." He rolled his eyes.

"Just be careful. Good night." Sam yawned and walked away.

Once he was out of earshot, Ruby took Dean's hand and hurried toward the front door. "Okay let's go."

"Alright." He locked the front door unaware that Sam had slipped out of the house and into the back of the Impala.

Ruby let go of his hand once they reached the car and settled comfortably in the passenger seat. "Did you get the lamb's blood?"

"Yeah, but it wasn't easy. Pretty sure the butcher thinks I'm insane." Dean admitted as he started the car and pulled away from the house.

She shook her head. "At least you got it. Oh my god! Sam! Didn't anyone ever tell you not to sneak up on a pregnant lady?"

"Sorry Ruby. Didn't mean to scare you. Are you alright?"

The blonde couldn't help smiling softly as he reminded her of their Sam a bit. "Yeah I'm fine."

"Oh good. So what the hell do you need lamb's blood for?" His green eyes narrowed at them.

"Sam, it's not that big of a deal. Get out." He stopped the car.

"No. What the hell have you dragged her into? And using mom's silverware too? You're a mess like always, Dean."

Ruby grew defensive and turned to look at Sam. "Hey! Get off his case, alright? Dean is trying his best. You're all so stuck in the past that you find it easier to believe that he is drunk instead of actually trying to change."

"Hey it's alright." Dean looked at her in awe not used to being defended like that.

She huffed shaking her head. "No it's not, but hey if he wants to know what is going on then go ahead. Keep driving."

"Okay." He took her hand and kissed it as he started to drive again.

The drive to Joliet was awkward to say the least. When they finally arrived, Sam was still confused as to what was going on. Dean and Ruby went inside the abandoned factory only to be disappointed when they found absolutely nothing. The girl appeared again this time looking even dirtier and a gash could be seen on her head. She flickered as they tried to approach her and then disappeared again. Suddenly Sam was there alongside Mary and Jessica.

"This isn't real. It can't be. Maybe if we kill ourselves it'll take us back." Dean suggested trying to think of ideas.

Ruby frowned at that idea. "Like in a dream. What if it just kills us though?"

"I don't know." He sighed.

"Guys, don't leave. Don't you want Sam to be happy?" Jessica spoke to them suddenly in the nightgown she died in.

"Dean, don't leave me. I'm alive just like you always wanted." Mary was also in the nightgown she died in.

The blonde's face twisted into that of disgust. "Okay that is seriously disturbing and cruel."

"Yeah it is. None of you are real." Dean looked away from them focusing on Ruby.

Ruby looked up into his green eyes. "Together or not at all."

"Together or not at all."

"Ruby.." His eyes fluttered open and he blinked slowly.

"She's okay. Bobby's got her." Sam sighed in relief freeing his brother from being strung up.

He set Dean down letting him regain his strength. Bobby was nearby looking over his daughter. Suddenly the Djinn attacked the younger Winchester and they fought for the upper hand. Sam got knocked into a set of stairs and struggled against the Djinn who was keeping him from getting up. It's hand glowed blue as it went to touch Sam's hand. Before it could connect, Dean drove a knife right through it.

"Not on my watch." He then collapsed to the ground as they watched it die.

As they went to leave, Dean and Ruby remembered the girl. So they looked around and sure enough there she was strung up just like they had been. She was still alive too. They got her down and brought her to the hospital. Dean and Ruby got checked over as well before being sent on their way. It took a little time for them to regain their strength. Once they did, Ruby gave Sam the biggest hug. She was relieved that he was okay and honestly had just missed him. It was only after she pulled away that her father finally spoke.

Bobby looked right at Dean clearly upset. "Now I'm glad that you guys are safe, but damn you idjit, she never should have been in that position in the first place!"

Ruby held Dean's hand squeezing it lightly. "Dad, I'm a grown woman and a hunter. I could have told him no. I could have told him to go get Sam. But I didn't. I would have been in that position regardless."

"I wished that my mother was alive. I saw what it would have been like if the demon didn't kill her. We never would have hunted. Jessica would be alive. Somehow I still met Ruby and married her. Knocked her up too." Dean recalled squeezing her hand back.

She blushed biting her lip lightly. "I can probably explain that. If you guys never got into hunting, you never would have met my dad or me. My wish was to be with Dean. At that moment with the Djinn staring me down, all I wanted was to be where I felt safest and that is with Dean."

He frowned and pressed a kiss to his daughter's head. "I love you kiddo. I just can't stand around and watch as you become the third blonde that they tragically lose."

"Bobby, that is not going to happen. I would die before I would ever let anyone get to Ruby." Dean assured him.

The older man sighed. "Just don't make me regret this. Keep my little girl safe."

They left Joliet around the same time. Bobby heading back home while the Winchesters and Ruby drove to wherever the road took them. Ruby splurged and got them adjoining rooms at a nice hotel in the next town they stopped in. She felt like they deserved it after the whole Djinn thing. After a hot shower, Dean changed into pajamas and watched curiously as Ruby looked at herself in the mirror.

"You okay?"

She tilted her head slightly then sighed. "Yeah I'm fine. Just got a little used to the baby bump and now it's just gone."

"I mean, I could put a baby in you right now if you want." Dean smirked at her playfully.

Ruby blushed then shot him a look. "Dean..."

"Yeah I know." He slid his arms around her from behind. "One day we'll have that again. The rings, the house, the baby. It'll all be real this time."

She smiled softly at that. "I don't know. That feels like a pipe dream, Dean."

"Maybe, but who says we can't have that in the future if we want it?" Dean pressed a kiss to her head.

Ruby leaned back against him sighing contently. "Yeah maybe. We've still got plenty of time to figure all of that out."

"Yeah we will. I.. I wanted to stay. I wanted to stay so bad. I mean, ever since Dad... all I can think about is how much this job sucks. How much it's cost us, you know? We've lost so much. We've... sacrificed so much." His voice cracked.

She turned around in his arms to face him and sighed. "It's not fair at all and it hurts like hell. People are alive because of us though. You guys didn't deserve any of this. You didn't deserve to have to raise Sam while you were still young enough to need someone to raise you, Dean. Sam didn't deserve to lose Jessica and have to deal with all of this special children bullshit."

"I know." Dean looked down sadly.

Ruby cupped his face making him look at her again. "It sucks, I know, but we will be happy. We always find a way, remember?"
