Notes:

Danny could only wait helplessly as the doctors examined Steve and Chelsea at the hospital. Snapping out of it, he got in touch with Jackson who made his way down there to see what was going on. It wasn't long after he arrived that Malia approached the nurses station. She spoke for a bit then walked over to the two men who were anxiously waiting.

"How are they?" Danny blurted out.

"They're both in stable condition. A bunch of tests were run and their stomachs were pumped. Preliminary results are showing that it looks like Chelsea had a bad interaction with her pain medication." Malia filled them in.

"The beer?" Jackson asked raising his eyebrows.

"From what we can tell, she only had about one beer in her system. It's highly advised to not drink alcohol when you're on pain meds, but she barely had a trace of hers in her system so she may have believed that it was safe." She explained to them.

"Alright, but uh, that doesn't explain why Steve is feeling the same effects though." Danny pointed out looking rather confused.

"Yeah that concerned the doctors too. We'll know for sure once the test results are in." Malia admitted.

Chin approached them smiling softly at Malia before growing serious again. "The beer bottles were brought back to the lab and are being analyzed now. So far the only prints on the bottles belong to Steve, Chelsea, Doris, and Catherine. Chelsea's prints are only on one bottle. It's presumably the one she drank from."

"If the beer was tampered with, that would certainly narrow it down." She paused as another doctor talked with her for a moment then she turned toward the men. "You can visit with them now."

Steve sat in a chair beside Chelsea's bed attached to an IV while holding her hand. "I don't know what happened, but I'm going to find out. I promise. But you've got to wake up, Peach."

"You should be taking it easy, Steven." Danny spoke up as he entered the room.

He let go of her hand and moved back to his bed. "I'm alright. I think."

"I'm not even sure what happened." He shook his head as Jackson sat down besides his sister.

Steve sighed trying to relax. "I went out onto my lanai and she was out on hers. I remember us talking and she walked over. Mom came out to give us beers. She apologized to Chelsea."

"So Doris gave you the beers. Who had access to your fridge?" Danny pressed a kiss to Chelsea's head.

He thought it over for a moment. "Besides myself? Catherine and my mother. Chelsea and you as well."

Chelsea stirred squeezing her brother's hand. "D..Doris.."

"Jersey? Shh, take it easy. It's okay." Danny sighed in relief checking on her.

She made a face then her eyes began to open. "Doris said I could have her beer. I shouldn't have, but.. I was upset."

"You're safe, sis. Just try to relax." Jackson spoke soothingly to her.

Chelsea eased up letting her eyes close again. "Okay."

"What's going on?" Catherine looked concerned as the man approached her.

Chin held his hands up lightly. "Steve and Chelsea are showing signs that they might have been drugged. They're in stable condition."

"That's.. crazy. Oh thank god. Stable's good." She relaxed a bit.

He nodded his head at her. "Yeah. Listen we think they were drugged through the beer that was in Steve's fridge. Is there any reason why your prints would be on those bottles?"

"Well of course my prints are on those bottles. I'm the one that took them out of the six pack container and put them into the fridge. I drank one and Steve drank one. We were fine though." Catherine explained to him.

Chin relaxed a bit. "Alright, that makes sense. Where were you last night?"

"I was at the naval base until seven and then I went back to my hotel room. Honestly I was staying at Steve's, but we had an amicable break up so I got a hotel room instead." She admitted with a sigh. "Maybe I should have stayed."

He shook his head. "No don't think like that. You could have been drugged if you had stayed. Or maybe you wouldn't have. It's no use stressing over the what ifs."

The investigation continued over the course of the next few days. Steve's condition improved to the point that he was allowed to leave the hospital. Chelsea was more alert, but they wanted to keep her longer just to be safe. The lab found small traces of a drug in the bottles that they had drank from, but the tests to identify it were inconclusive. Deep down Steve knew that his mother was involved though he also knew that he couldn't prove it. So it was no surprise that he outright accused her once he was home.

"Excuse me?" Doris stared at her son in shock.

Steve glared at his mother. "I said what did you do? Our beers didn't just drug themselves."

"I can't believe that you have the audacity to accuse your own mother, Steven. I would never mess with your health like that."

He scoffed at her. "You faked your own death with a car bomb no less and let us believe for years that you were dead. Who knows what you are truly capable of, Mom?"

"I've heard enough of this. I'm not going to stand here and take this from you. Yes I've made my mistakes, but everything I've done was to protect you and your sister." Doris turned away and packed her things. "I'm leaving. I'll come back from Mary's once you've come to your senses."

Steve shook his head at her. "Not until I search your things."

"What? No. What right do you have to do that? You don't even have a motive or probable cause." She gasped at him.

He looked through her things only to be disappointed when he didn't find the drug. "I'm 5-0. We have leeway."

"You're being ridiculous, Steven. There are you happy? You didn't find anything. I told you it wasn't me." Doris huffed gesturing at her things before packing them again.

His eyes rolled at her as he turned away. "Goodbye Mom."

"Alright I want the full story." Danny sighed moving to sit down.

Steve rubbed his face and sat back against the couch. "Okay. I went out on the lanai and saw Chelsea out on hers. She was kind of upset so I was just trying to talk her through it. Chelsea knows you love her, but it was hard on her to see you acting like a big happy family with Rachel after the baby was born."

"Yeah I figured as much. I never meant to hurt her." He frowned at that.

He nodded his head. "So we're talking and Mom steps out with beers. I take one and she gives hers to Chelsea. She apologized to Chelsea for how rude she was when they first met. We drank the beers and then Chelsea had to pee so I told her to just use my bathroom since it was closer. So she goes inside and leaves her bottle on the counter. I went in a few minutes later and did the same."

"Alright that all sounds pretty normal so far."

Steve frowned as he tried to remember what happened next. "I was talking to Mom. She said she was heading to bed so I said goodnight. Music was playing softly, but I'm not sure where it was coming from. It was the same song that played the first time Chelsea and I... you know. Anyway I remember leaving the kitchen and the next thing I remember is waking up in bed naked. I heard a thud which had woken me up. She was on the ground unconscious fresh from the shower, but she was half dressed."

"That's pretty much what Chelsea remembers too. Well minus the music. She said she felt dizzy when she woke up. After she showered, she started to get dressed and felt even more dizzy. Then she woke up in the hospital. So you said you heard the song right? Well Chelsea said she noticed the scent of cherry blossoms. The power of suggestion is a hell of a thing." Danny filled him in.

His eyes narrowed a bit. "My mother had to be behind it. Chelsea said she knew what happened between us in Japan. I just don't get why my mother would do this. I mean, what's the point?"

"Unfortunately we can't prove it yet. We just have to keep her the hell away from Chelsea."

Steve sighed shaking his head. "I'm sorry, Danny. I'm so sorry. I know how much you love her."

"Hey as much as I want to be absolutely livid at you, babe, I'm not. You were both drugged. If your minds were completely clear, I know nothing would have happened. It wasn't your fault." Danny assured him though he still absolutely hated that they were even in this situation in the first place.

He ran his hands over his face in frustration. "I searched her things. I checked all over the house. If my mother drugged us, there is no proof at all."

"I think Doris is too careful for that. She's the same woman who faked her death years ago. We know that she flew here to see you and that she took a taxi from the airport. Now there's no way she could have brought the drug with her unless it was disguised as medication." He pointed out.

Steve looked over at him. "There wasn't any medication in her things. She only had a short time between getting the beers and bringing them to us. So there wouldn't have been enough time for a pill or capsule to dissolve."

"Actually it's pretty easy if the drug was in liquid form. She only needed just enough to drug two people which wouldn't be too much. You could easily disguise it as insulin, eye drops, one of those little bottles of vodka, or probably a slew of other things." Erin added leaning in the doorway of Steve's office.

"Even so, Doris would have been careful with how she disposed of the drug's container." Danny remarked running his hand through his hair.

His brows furrowed as he thought about it. "I still don't get why my mother would go through all of this trouble."

"Well you said that she knew about your time in Japan, right? Maybe we should start there. If you were part of a classified SEAL team, no one outside of the team, your commander, the higher ups, and anyone that saw you in Japan should have known that you were there. So how in the heck could Doris possibly know?" She pointed out gesturing toward Steve.

"I can answer that." Kono handed a folder to Steve. "According to her phone records, her calls were pretty spread out. She may have tried to keep the calls hidden, but the phone company still tracks the GPS signal of the phone unless the phone is turned off. Anyway I was able to come up with a loose timeline of where she was in the past year or so up until she arrived here."

Steve nodded his head flipping the folder open. "Good work. Alright so she was already in Japan when my team arrived. Wait this says she was in Korea when..."

"When Wo Fat had you captive. Yeah. Considering there were no real supplies for the baby in the warehouse, I don't think Joan was actually supposed to be brought to Korea. I think she was supposed to be held here until you got on the plane and then returned safely. But Chelsea was the wrench in their plans." Kono theorized.

"And from there she went to London just after we returned home. Okay I think I'm getting a clearer picture. Doris knew what you guys did in Japan. She saw Chelsea in the warehouse protecting her granddaughter and probably recognized her as being the same girl from Japan. Everything gets messed up in Korea so she lays low in London after finding out that Chelsea survived the shooting." Danny walked them through the timeline.

He looked over at Danny stoically. "Then she flew to Hawaii earlier than we thought. I think my mother was the mystery woman that Grace saw at the hospital."

"Okay well that would give her even more time to get the drug if she got it here." Erin added.

Chin nodded at them as the group walked out of Steve's office. "Well we think we know where Doris acquired the drug."

"It was a new drug that was undergoing clinical testing. In lower doses, it is believed that it could help with drug addiction. Similar to methadone. Unfortunately, if you give someone a higher dose, it'll be like slipping them a date rape drug." Malia explained to them.

He walked over to the table in the middle of the office tapping on it until a few images appeared on the big screen. "Now the place that was doing the clinical testing was supposed to be starting its third phase of testing, but when the batch of drug samples arrived, there wasn't enough. According to the police report, the samples had been counted before leaving the lab, but some were missing by the time they reached the testing facility."

"How much was missing?" Danny looked over at the screen in concern.

"About the same amount that drugged Steve and Chelsea. The lab itself is about twenty five minutes away from the testing facility." Malia continued.

Chin gestured toward the screen. "The same guy delivered the samples for each phase of testing. All the samples were there except for this last time. He said a doctor met him at the door to accept the samples and they recounted them like they always do before he left. I gave him a line up of photos to look at and he pointed Doris out. He said her hair was a different color and style though that matches with the wig you found at the hospital, Steve."

"Okay so she has the means and the opportunity. I'm still not seeing a motive here." The blond detective sighed.

Steve's jaw clenched as he took in all of this information. "We will after I bring her in."

"Steven, this is ridiculous! I've already told you that I've done nothing wrong." Doris protested as her son led her into an interrogation room a short while later.

His blue eyes glared at her. "You drugged your own son and an innocent woman. You could have killed us!"

"I have no idea what you are talking about. I would never do something like that." She huffed at him.

Steve scoffed at her. "We have a witness that can put the drugs in your hands. You had all the opportunity to drug our beers. Hell, you've been stalking us too. We have proof that you were in Japan and Korea at the same time as us."

"Fine. I'll admit that I was in Japan and Korea. I had no idea that you would even be in Japan, but I'd recognize you anywhere. You looked so happy with her."

He scowled at that. "And what about Korea?"

"It wasn't supposed to go down like that. I would never put Joan in harm's way. When I saw them in that warehouse, I knew Chelsea must really love you to be protecting your niece like that." Doris admitted.

"No. Chelsea is just a decent human being. I'm the one she loves." Danny spoke up annoyed at the older woman.

He shook his head. "You're trying to distract us from the real matter at hand. Why were you in Korea? Why are you doing any of this?"

"I don't like your tone, Steven. I would like to speak with my lawyer." She spoke calmly to her son.

Before Steve could respond, Danny grabbed his arm leading him out of the room. He let out a frustrated sigh walking into his office instead. Danny followed letting Steve calm down a bit.

"It's alright. Let her have her lawyer. She's clearly hiding something if she doesn't want to answer your questions." The blond detective tried to calm him down. "So while she gets her lawyer, we keep investigating."

Chelsea sighed leaning her head back against the pillows. "It just feels like one thing after another, you know? I'm tired of it."

"Anyone would be, but it's going to be okay. You're going to heal up and live a happy life with Danny." Her brother assured her.

"Knock knock. Surprise!" Mary knocked on the door grinning as she held Joan in her carrier.

The brunette grinned softly gesturing for her to come in. "Hey. Oh Mary, this is my brother Jackson. Bro, this is Mary McGarrett, Steve's sister. This little cutie is her daughter and my goddaughter Joan. I can't remember if you guys met at that party a few weeks back."

"We did briefly. Hi." Mary smiled setting the carrier down on an empty seat and picking Joan up. "I thought a little visit might make you feel a little better. How are you?"

She nodded her head smiling back at her. "Thank you. I appreciate that. I'm alright. They think it was a bad interaction with my pain meds and whatever was slipped into the beer. I barely used my pain meds unless the pain was really bad though. I hated the way they made me feel. I would never be stupid enough to drink beer while on them. I honestly believed enough time had passed from the last time I had a pill to safely consume alcohol."

"I believe you, Chels. You don't have to explain yourself to us. I'm just so sorry that my mother put you through all of this. Steve pretty much moved Joan and I in until they can put our mother behind bars." Mary admitted with a sigh.

Chelsea reached out squeezing her hand. "Mary, you have absolutely nothing to worry about because you are nothing like her. You are so great with Joan. You would never ever abandon her the way Doris did to you and Steve."

"Thank you. I appreciate that." The blonde smiled softly squeezing her hand in return.

She smiled softly at her and looked at the baby. "You are getting so big! It's so good to see you."

Steve huffed as he stepped into the room. "Mary, what part of stay put do you not understand?"

"I'm not a dog, Steven. We're safe." She let her brother take the baby smiling as he softened toward her.

The last thing he wanted was to fight in front of his young niece so Steve dropped it for now. They spent some time with Chelsea for a bit. Mary mostly just trying to keep the other woman's mind off of things. It was only when Joan started to get fussy that her mother decided it was time to go.

"She's almost due for her bottle so we should really get back to the house." Mary took the baby back placing her in her carrier securely.

Steve nodded his head at her. "Alright let me just talk to Chelsea real quick and I'll take you."

"I can take them, sir. I mean, I was just about to head out myself. I still have to call my parents." Jackson stood up looking at Steve.

He eyed him carefully then sighed. "Thank you. I appreciate that."

"I'll see you tomorrow, but you have my number if you need me. Love you." He pressed a kiss to his sister's head.

Chelsea smiled at her brother. "Okay. Love you too. Hey, um, be gentle when you tell them."

"Relax. I'm not going to tell them everything. It's an active investigation. I'm not stupid." He assured her.

She nodded her head in agreement. "Thank you."

"Bye." Mary smiled helping Joan wave at them.

They waved back watching them leave and then she laughed slightly. "Steve, relax. My brother wouldn't let anything happen to them."

Steve sighed and moved to sit down beside her bed. "Yeah I know. How are you feeling?"

Chelsea relaxed again looking at him. "I'm okay. Where's Danny?"

He held her hand and smiled softly. "Oh he swung by Rachel's to see the kids. He promised Grace he'd let her know how you were doing and he wanted to tell her in person. Danno will be here soon though."

She nodded her head giving his hand a light squeeze. "Good. Ugh I can't wait until I get to go home. I hate hospitals."

Steve chuckled softly at her. "Yeah me too. Look, I'm so sorry that all of this happened. Had I known she was going to do something like this, I would have kept her far from you."

Chelsea gave him a small smile. "It's not your fault. You're just as much a victim in all of this as I am. I just want to get back to one hundred percent again and not have to deal with all of this, you know? I want to be happy and safe."

He smiled pressing a light kiss to her hand. "You will be. I promise. You're going to get better and all of this will pass."

She bit her lip nodding her head in agreement. "Yeah I hope so."

Danny walked into the room a little while later to find her asleep and Steve sitting by her bedside. He rubbed at the back of his neck sighing softly. Steve glanced over at him and nodded his head. He nodded back smiling slightly at him.

He gestured toward the sleeping brunette. "Mary came to visit with Joanie. Jackson took them home and was going to call his parents. Chelsea was feeling a bit tired so I told her to take a nap. How are the kids?"

"Uh thanks. Kids are good. Grace is understandably upset about this, but I told her that Chelsea was going to be okay. She thinks it was a bad reaction with the pain medication." Danny explained softly.

Steve sighed furrowing his brows a bit. "Probably was the best way to explain it."

"Yeah. Doctors said that Chelsea can probably go home tomorrow at least." He brushed her hair away from her face gently.

She stirred awake and her face lit up when she saw him. "Danny!"

"Hey beautiful. Sorry for waking you." Danny pressed a kiss to her head.

Chelsea smiled happy that he was there. "It's okay. Are the kids alright?"

"The kids are good. Grace sends her love and well wishes." He smiled softly at her.

She relaxed still smiling at him. "Good. So what aren't you telling me?"

"You know me too well." Danny chuckled softly and laid down beside her on the bed with a sigh. "Doris knew about your fling in Japan because she was there and recognized Steve. She was also in Korea."

Chelsea frowned at that. "Of course she was. Why am I not surprised? I wonder..."

"What? What is it?" He looked at his girlfriend curiously.

She bit her lip in thought. "The floorboard in Steve's house. I went to the house to meet up with Catherine the day we had lunch together and I swear that through the window I saw Doris putting a floorboard down. It struck me as odd, but it was her house so I figured there wasn't anything wrong with it."

Steve furrowed his brows at her. "Did she have anything in her hands?"

Chelsea shook her head. "No, but if she did, she could have quickly hidden it by the time I got to the door."

"Alright don't worry about it. We'll look into it, babe." Danny assured her with a smile.
