Chelsea gave the other woman a look of disbelief. "You're really not going to talk to him about it?"
"It's not that big of a deal. I'm pretty sure he only did it to shut me up, you know? He was in a rush to get on that plane to go save you guys." Erin shrugged taking a sip of her tea.
She raised her eyebrow at the raven haired woman as they sat on Chelsea's lanai. "Yet you dropped everything to come save him."
"To save you and the baby. Yeah and I guess Steve too. It was the right thing to do. It had nothing to do with the fact that he kissed me before he left." She pointed out.
Chelsea nodded her head taking a sip of her own cup of tea. "If you say so. Thank you, by the way. I appreciate you coming to save us."
"You're welcome. Like I said, it was the right thing to do. So how are you and Danny?" Erin asked with a smile as she stretched out her legs.
Her face lit up at the mention of her boyfriend. "We're doing good. Steve had to practically drag him to work. I know having my brother around makes him worry a little less though."
"I don't blame him. You gave us a good scare. At least you're safe now. Hopefully things can just calm down now."
Chelsea couldn't help laughing slightly at that. "With their job, I don't think it ever really calms down."
"I think we found a common link between the victims. We finally got a hold of their financials. They each had a deposit made to their account three days prior to death. The deposits were all identical to the tune of five thousand dollars." Danny recalled showing his partner the copies of the bank statements.
Steve raised his brows looking over the statements. "Do we know who made the deposits?"
"Yeah, a dead man. The deposits were traced back to an account belonging to Phillip Croft."
That got his attention and he narrowed his eyes. "Ethan?"
"Ethan Croft hasn't been back to Hawaii since his parents' deaths. Nothing shows that he has had any contact with the victims and he has a solid alibi." He sighed shaking his head.
Steve glanced around leaning against the table in the middle of the office. "Well what do we know about Phillip and this bank account?"
"He made business trips to Hawaii starting about a year and a half ago which lines up with his confession of weapons dealing on the islands. The bank account in question was opened around the time of his third business trip here. According to his official financial records though, this account doesn't exist." Chin spoke up building a timeline for them.
"That must of been where his funds from his illegal weapons deals went. A secret account with funds that he can just write off as something else." Danny shrugged his shoulders.
He nodded his head at that. "Do we know if anyone else had access to that account?"
"Phillip Croft was the only one to have access to that account up until a week before his death. According to the bank, he had called prior to his arrival on the island to inquire about granting access to accounts. They faxed a form over and he brought it in person to the bank already signed. The only other person to have access to the account according to the official paperwork is, well, Chelsea." Chin showed them the paperwork.
"That's.. wait this paperwork is dated. She was already here when this paper was signed so she couldn't have possibly signed it." He realized pointing out the date.
Steve rubbed his temples thinking for a moment. "Well the old man and his wife were blackmailing her right? Potentially implicating her in his crimes would be quite the leverage."
"Yeah, but she didn't cave nor was she under investigation for said crimes so he obviously didn't get to use that leverage yet." Danny pointed out.
"Maybe he did use it, but she didn't cave like he expected. She ran away to Hawaii and the only reason he knew was because his son screwed up by having those guys follow her around. Phillip could have still sold her out to the authorities, but that wouldn't have given him what he wanted. He probably wanted to assess the situation first once he got here, but things spiraled out of control." The dark haired man theorized gesturing toward the screens.
He shook his head sighing. "It still doesn't answer who would have access to that money. Phillip is dead and Chelsea has been accounted for all this time. Were there any withdrawals from the account prior to the first victim?"
"There were timed withdrawals once every two weeks, but those went straight to one of his more known bank accounts. Wait, it looks like he paid a woman five thousand a week after opening the account. Same as the victims. Can't be a coincidence. It seems to be a steady payment that hasn't stopped." Danny pointed at it on the screen.
"Local woman named Leilani Kahue. No priors. Record is clean. Phone logs show that she and Phillip have had a lot of contact in the past year." Kono informed them pulling up the woman's ID on the screen.
"Think she could be the mystery woman who visited Chelsea at the hospital?" He frowned at the thought.
Steve eyed the image on the screen then turned to Danny. "No. The woman was taller. Alright, Chin and I are going to go track down Miss Kahue. Danny, go talk to Chelsea. See what she knows. Kono, find out everything there is to know about Leilani. See if we can actually tie her to using the account."
"But I don't think.. I mean.. she's still recovering, Steve." Danny sighed looking over at his partner.
He grabbed the blonde's shoulder squeezing it reassuringly. "If I thought she couldn't handle it, I'd leave her out of this."
The blonde detective sighed as he walked into the house. He couldn't help smiling when he saw her sprawled out on the couch. Chelsea smiled when she saw him and waved him over. Danny approached her greeting his girlfriend with a kiss before sitting down beside her. She couldn't help snuggling into him a bit just happy that he was there.
"Feeling good?" He smiled at her.
Chelsea nodded her head grinning softly. "Yeah it's been a pretty good day. You didn't cut out just to check on me did you?"
"Well no, but I'm glad to see you're doing good. Actually it's our latest case. It involves the Crofts." Danny sighed then gave her a quick recap of the case in question.
She sighed sitting up a little. "Can't say I expected them to pop up in a case again."
"Neither can I. Do you know how your signature ended up on that form?"
Chelsea tucked her brown hair behind her ear. "Phillip Croft had one of those machines that like writes your signature perfectly every time. I'm not sure what it's called. He said it made it easier to sign things. I tried it once and it really did mimic my signature perfectly. It was kind of crazy."
"Was that before or after he made your life a living hell? What haven't you told me, Jersey?" Danny frowned at her.
She bit her lip at his words. "Ethan's girlfriend worked for the Crofts charity foundation. That's how they met. I helped out sometimes with events and stuff. It's how I ended up becoming friends with Ethan. Anyway, I was at the mansion one afternoon helping set up for an event. I needed one of the Crofts to sign off on an order of something and Phillip brought me into his office showing me that machine. He kind of tried to flirt with me too, but I practically ran out of there."
"How aware were you of his dealings in Hawaii?"
Chelsea thought about it for a second and then shrugged her shoulders. "Not much. It was pretty common knowledge that he went on business trips, but I never asked where he was going. It wasn't until that night I saw him shoot that gang member that I realized he had some illegal business on the side."
"Alright good. Does the name Leilani Kahue ring any bells?" He held her hand rubbing the back of it with his thumb gently.
A soft laugh fell from her lips. "You mean Lacy Leilani? Yeah I've heard of her. Ethan saw her at the Croft mansion in Jersey one night. She was wearing black lace and we joked about it. Not the first time his dad's had an affair, according to him. What about her?"
"Phillip was paying her five thousand a week. Same amount that was deposited in the accounts of the victims. How much do you know about her?"
Chelsea relaxed a bit beside him. "Not much. They were having an affair. I think she was his financial advisor in Hawaii or something. Ethan, Theresa, and I overheard Phillip arguing with her over the phone once. Something about a bank and money. It wasn't very clear. Ethan said it wasn't unusual for his dad to give his mistresses hush money."
"Yeah Steve? It's Danny. Leilani might work in the bank or in a similar financial capacity. Yeah. She was his mistress too. Uh huh. Alright." Danny had already pulled out his phone and called his partner.
She just smiled softly and rested her head against his shoulder.
"Miss Kahue, hi. Detective Chin Ho Kelly and this is Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, 5-0. We would like to ask you some questions." Chin smiled politely at their suspect.
"Gentlemen, please come in. Anything I could do to help." Leilani's red glossy lips glistened in the light.
Steve followed Chin into the office nodding at her. "We'd like to ask you about Philip Croft."
"Oh my darling Philip. I'm still so heartbroken over his untimely death. How can I help?" She leaned against her desk appearing sad.
"We're sorry for your loss. Actually a bank account of his just came up in a case of ours. An account that was made in this bank which he kept a secret." Chin kept his tone even and a bit sympathetic.
"Ah yes that account. I helped him open that one up. He wanted funds separate from his wife that she wouldn't know about or be able to touch. We fell hard and fast for each other. I know it was wrong, but you can't help who you love." She smiled fondly at the thought.
Steve eyed her curiously. "And the five thousand he paid you weekly?"
"He said the woman he loves..loved.. deserves to live like he lives..lived. So he gave me money weekly. Phillip loved to spoil me." Leilani pushed her hair away from her face.
"Let's talk more recently. Phillip came into the bank a week prior to his death inquiring about granting access to that account. He handed you a signed form." He pointed out showing her a copy of the form.
"Yes well he was a very cautious man. He wasn't going to let this account fall into the hands of his imbecile son. I never met the woman who signed this form though."
His blue eyes studied her mannerisms for a moment. "You were upset when you saw that he chose another woman to be the one to have access to the account, weren't you?"
"Phillip gave me the ATM card for the account. My name never needed to be on the paper." Leilani gloated and then her eyes widened when she realized what she had just said.
"So you did have access to the account. Either you're also a killer or you were merely an accomplice." Chin gestured toward her only to jump up as she made a mad dash toward the door.
Steve grabbed her and they got her handcuffed. "So which is it? Why'd you do it, Leilani?"
"Because he got that bitch pregnant! Phillip loved Sheila, but he wasn't in love with her. They were only still married for appearances." She spat angrily at them.
"I thought you said you never met Chelsea."
"I never did meet her, okay? Look, I went to this charity event at their mansion in New Jersey. It was a fundraiser and one of the raffle prizes was a vacation to Hawaii which this bank was sponsoring. I saw him talking to her and.. I saw her bump. When I saw her name on that form a few months later, that's when I put two and two together. He said he loved me, but he got another bitch pregnant behind my back." Tears welled up in her brown eyes smearing her mascara a little bit.
He shook his head at her. "That wasn't his child. That was his grandchild. You threw away your life for nothing. Still doesn't explain your victims though."
"What? No. That's not... no. Can't be. The first one was a guy from one of the gangs Phillip sold weapons to, but.. I paid him the money to kill Sheila. He was just a loose end. The second one was a private investigator. I hired him to find that bitch and her child. He failed so he had to go as well. The third was Phillip's lawyer. I heard how Phillip died and I wanted to make sure that bitch didn't get a single cent. Unfortunately the lawyer grew a conscience and had to be dealt with too." Leilani rolled her eyes at them.
"His son's girlfriend was the one that was pregnant. Phillip was blackmailing Chelsea to find his grandchild." Chin informed her as they walked her out of the office.
Steve chuckled slightly as they walked her through the bank and out the front door. "Although you weren't too far off. Chelsea said the old man did come on to her, but she rejected him."
Once Leilani was headed off to lock up, they secured her office searching for it. Her house was also searched and evidence linking her to the crimes was found in both places. Steve was tired by the time he left the office for the night though he was pleasantly surprised to find his on again off again flame waiting by his truck. He greeted Catherine with a kiss then they got into his truck. After a quick stop for food, the two of them went back to the McGarrett home. They ate dinner outside on the lanai catching up on what they'd missed in each other's lives since they last saw each other.
It was only when they were done eating that Chelsea walked over from her house. "Hey, uh, sorry to interrupt."
Steve shook his head smiling softly at her. "Hey no, it's fine. Everything okay?"
"Jersey right? It's nice to meet you. I'm Catherine." The brunette smiled introducing herself.
Chelsea straightened her back smiling slightly at the woman. "It's Chelsea. Only Danny calls me Jersey. It's nice to meet you though. Everything's fine, Steve. I just.. nevermind. We can talk about the case tomorrow."
He sighed giving her a sympathetic look. "You're safe, Chels. She's not going to hurt you."
Her features softened and she nodded her head. "I know. Guess I just needed to hear you say it. Oh a taxi just pulled up in front of your house. You might want to go check that out."
Steve nodded glancing inside his house for a moment before turning his attention back toward her. "Thanks for the heads up."
Chelsea smiled at him. "No problem. Let me get back before Danny freaks out."
"Hey before you go, I'm going to be in town for a bit. We should do lunch." Catherine suggested to her with a smile.
She looked at Steve for a moment and then back at Catherine. "Sure. We'll figure out the details later."
They watched her walk back toward her house where Danny was standing waiting for her. Steve then walked back inside of his own home and that was when he heard the knock at the front door. He walked through the house quickly making his way toward the front door. If it was Mary, the last thing he wanted was to keep her waiting outside with a baby. Steve pulled the front door open and his body froze. It wasn't Mary at all. He suddenly felt like a kid again.
His blue eyes widened a bit as he stood there in shock. "Mom?"
