A/N: And here we reach the end. After 2 years and 108 chapters, Ash's Ultra Journey Comes to a close. Thanks so much to everyone who stayed through to the end.
Chapter 108: Alola, and Thanks for the Memories
When the light had finally died down, no one could believe their eyes. The city was alive with light, and people were coming out of the remaining homes to stare in awe at the wonderful lights around them. And best of all, shining bright as ever overhead was the sun they had been deprived of for so long.
"Its incredible...I never thought I'd see such beauty every again..."
"We did it, Phyco. We brought the light back to our world."
Nebby landed a few feet away, Ash nearly falling off in exhaustion. The moment he had touched the ground, Lillie flung her arms around him in a tight bear hug.
"Don't you ever do that to me again! I...I thought I lost you..."
"Shh, its okay. Its all over now."
But Ash was wrong, as a large shadow loomed over them. Looking up, they saw Necrozma in a different form. Instead of the black, bipedal crystalline monstrosity, he was now in a quadrupedal, luminous dragon form.
"Oh come on! I thought he was finished!"
"Wait guys, look. I...I don't think he wants to hurt us."
Lillie was right. Necrozma just stood there silently, and if one took a close look at his face, one might think he was smiling.
"But what changed?"
"Rotomdex, you want to..."
"Right! Hey bigzzz fella, what's shaking? Mind sharing your story with old Rotom?"
For a few good minutes, Rotom listened closely while Necrozma spoke to him, the others waiting intently for his report. At last, Rotom floated down, with quite the story to tell.
"You're not going to believe this, but everything we thought we knew about Necrozma is wrong! In ancient times, he did provide light to the people of Alola, but overtime they became overcome with greed, and began fighting each other over the energy he provided. Enraged, Necrozma began to take it back, but the people revolted and sealed him away in the form you saw before."
Everyone gaped in shock.
"Necrozma was a good guy?"
"It would seem so. Enraged by their betrayal, Necrozma became convinced that humans were unworthy of his gift, and vowed to wipe them out the next time he awoke. But seeing everyone help you Ash proved to him that there was still hope yet."
Moved by the story, Captain Phyco stepped forward.
"Necrozma, on behalf of us all, I humbly apologize for the greed of our ancestors. We promise not to squander your gifts again."
Satisfied, Necrozma flew off, leaving the people left to rebuild in peace. Ash and Lillie watched the people rejoice, smiling for the first time in what felt like forever.
"Its beautiful, isn't it?"
"It sure is..."
Upon returning to their world, The Ultra Guardians were given a hero's welcome, much to their embarrassment. All of them were provided medals for their service, and Anabel thanked them each personally for their hard work in protecting the world. Each of them had fun in Alola, but soon it was time for everyone to leave.
Brock and Misty were the first to go. Misty needed to get back to Cerulean City to check in on the gym, while Brock's internship was up and he needed to return to University. He and Olivia had a very heartfelt goodbye.
"Farewell, my sweet. Until we meet again."
"Call me as soon as you get back. I can't bare to not hear your voice for so long!"
"I will, and I promise to write every week!"
Everyone rolled their eyes at their love display.
"Why do I feel the urge to drag him away?"
"Oh, let him have this. After all the times I had to do it, I'm glad he's found someone who loves him for who he is."
Next to depart were Max and May. Max had decided to head to Unova next, while May decided to head home to Sinnoh and try the contest circuit there.
"Max, the next time we see each other, I want a full battle."
"You're on, Ash! I'll take you anytime."
"Bye, Ash. It was nice seeing you again."
"You too, May."
Next was Dawn, who had been granted a fashion deal in Kalos. Her goodbyes were short, but heartfelt.
"Congratulations, Ash. Good luck on your next journey."
"You too, Dawn."
Iris and Cilan left next. Iris intended to go back to Unova and challenge the league herself, much to everyone's surprise.
"Hey, if the kid can win a league, why can't it?"
"Well, I wish you the best of luck."
"Thanks, Ash. Maybe some day I'll challenge the Alola League myself!"
"Bring it on!"
"Oh, and who's to say you'll still be champion by then?'
Everyone had a good laugh, and then it was Cilan's turn to say goodbye.
"See ya later, Cilan. Good luck with your traveling counseling business."
"Thanks, Ash. If you ever need help, you know where to find me!"
After them, it was Sun and Gladion's turn to take their leave. Sun was headed for Sinnoh to continue his journey, while Gladion decided to head for Johto.
"Hau's not going with you?"
"Nope. Hala offered him an apprenticeship as a future Kahuna with Tapu Koko's blessing, and he jumped at it."
"Huh. Well, good for him."
"Good luck, Ash. Take care of Lillie."
"I will, Gladion. You take care yourself."
At last, it was Ash's turn to leave. Professor Burnett and Kukui saw him off at the airport, and they had a very long goodbye.
"Bye, Ash. You'll always have a home here."
"I know, Burnett, and I will be back. You guys are like family to me."
"Same here, buddy."
Ash then turned to his Rotomdex.
"Be good for Kukui, alright? Don't give any trainers a hard time, you hear?"
"Zzzt, don't worry, I'll be on my best behavior!"
"You sure you don't want him to come with you? He might come in handy."
"Thanks, but this is his home. I'm sure a new trainer could get more out of him than I could."
Ash looked around the airport, sadly. There was someone missing, and it broke his heart.
"She...she didn't come."
"I guess not. Don't worry Ash, you know she's rooting for you."
"I know. I just... tell her I said goodbye, ok?"
"We will, Ash."
Everyone turned to see Lillie running towards them, nearly out of breath.
"Lillie! You made it!"
"Of course! Did you really think I'd miss this?"
It was then Ash noticed the suitcase in her hand, hope filling his eyes.
"Does this mean..."
"It does. Wherever your journey takes you next, I want to be with you."
Ash grabbed Lillie and gave her a passionate kiss, earning an "AWE!" from Kukui, Burnett, and a few passerby's, much to their embarrassment.
"Attention, passengers. PK Airlines Flight 22 to Vermillion City is now boarding at gate 23. Repeat, PK Airlines Flight 22 to Vermillion City is now boarding at gate 23."
"Guess that's our cue. You ready to see the world?"
Lillie smiled, grabbing Ash's hand.
"With you, I'm ready for everything."
With that, the two love birds entered the plane, ready for their next adventure. They didn't know what lay in store, but they didn't care. As long as they had each other, they were ready to take on the world.
A/N: Phew! This has been by far the most difficult story to write, but I had a blast the entire time. But don't you worry, Ash and Lillie's adventures aren't over yet. After I take some time to catch up on other stories, I'll be back with a sequel, so stay tuned! Until then, stay golden, my friends.
