Chapter 11

So what lies will Liarsward Ass Dicksmack tell today?

Thank you to Team Harpy. Thank you to my readers. Without you, I am nothing.

Thank you to whoever nominated me for 8 Golden Onion Awards. Voting is from now until August 23rd. You can vote for three of your favorites but only once a day.

All songs are property of the writers and performers and do not belong to Masen or me.

I look at my watch. Most of the time, I don't even look at it as I do my best to be on time everywhere. It's more of an accessory than anything else- a present from my parents when I graduated high school.

But these days, it seems I am always looking at it where Masen is involved. Here we are finally at Evolution Studios ready to lay down some tracks and my lead singer is nowhere to be found.

As per usual.

Even though I am always on his ass for his lack of time management skills, I usually let it go. But time is money and this is costing me about five hundred and forty dollars and if we don't get started quick and in a hurry, it will be costing me more.

We've spent the last month rehearsing Masen's songs and they are honestly great and I'm not just saying that because he's my boyfriend. He has this gift and I wish he would take it seriously.

I apologize to Quil, the sound engineer, again and he just shrugs it off. He's getting paid regardless of when we start.

I walk over to the guys. "Are you all warmed up?"

They all nod and give various answers to the affirmative.

"Sorry, I'm late."

I whirl around to see Masen walking in casually, guitar case in hand. He comes up short when he sees my expression and runs his free hand through his already riotous locks.

"You're mad."

"Why ever would you think that?"

"Cause if looks could kill…"

I walk over to him and get real close, trying not to inhale his enticing cologne.

"If you weren't so damn talented, you'd be out on your ass right now."

His eyes widened at my deadly lethal tone.

"Do you have any idea what this is costing me? Me personally, out of my bank account?"

He shakes his head.

"Let me put it this way, I will be eating canned pasta and ramen for the next month. So, can we get on with this, before I have to dip into my rent money?"

He opens his mouth to say something but stealing another look at my face, he smartly decides not to. Instead, he walks over to the band and gets his guitar ready, greeting the guys. I walk out of the room and settle in beside Quil.

"We're all here, finally. I think we are ready to go." I say to him. He gives me the thumbs up, before speaking into the mic.

Masen is focused on my face but I stubbornly focus just past his shoulder. Out of my peripheral, I see his shoulders slump a little but then he shakes it off and puts his game face on.

"How many songs are we laying down today?" Quil asks.

I look down at my papers. "Four.." I take another look. "No, five. This one wasn't here before." I tap where Masen has written 'Never Stop' in my notebook. I hate when he changes things at the last minute.

He jots down something on the book in front of him, then asks them to play just a little so he can adjust the sound.

They do so and he messes with his soundboard before nodding.

"Okay, are we ready to rock and roll?"

He pushes a few more buttons and then says, "Go."

The opening chords of 'You and Me' start up.

Masen's voice starts and I get so lost in it. In his words. In him.

Damn him.

'All the things that I want to say just aren't coming out right

I'm tripping on words

You got my head spinning

I don't know where to go from here

Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do, nothing to prove

And it's you and me and all of the people

And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you'

His eyes are burning into mine and I can't look away as he pours his heart and soul in this song.

The song ends and Quil turns his head to look at me. "This guy is good. Where did you find him?"

"In a hotel bar, of all places." I shake my head and take a deep breath.

He plays it back for me and asks me if I want to change anything.

"What do you think?"

"This is your dollar. You're asking me?"

"Yes. I'm asking you. I think it sounds amazing but I'm a lot biased."

"I think it's a hit."

"You're not blowing smoke up my ass are you?"

"Ma'am, if I thought it would get me anywhere with you then I might, but seeing how your lead singer looks at you and how you're trying not to look at him, there would be no point in 'blowing smoke up your ass'."

I laugh. "Keep it."

"You got it."

I give my own thumbs up to my guys.

We roll through 'Hanging By A Moment', 'First Time', and 'Daylight' though we have to do multiple takes on all three, but we finally get it down.

"I know you guys need a break but we are so close to being done. I'll feed you all after we are done if you could just power through this last song." I plead. If we can get this one done in the next forty-five minutes then I won't be charged an additional ninety dollars.

"We have this, Bella," Masen calls out.

At Quil's signal, Masen and Peter start with Brady hot on their heels.

'This is my love song to you

Let every woman know I'm yours

So you can fall asleep each night, babe

And know I'm dreaming of you more

You're always hoping that we make it

You always want to keep my gaze

We'll you're the only one I see, love

And that's the one thing that won't change

I will never stop trying

I will never stop watching as you leave

I will never stop losing my breath

Every time I see you looking back at me

And I will never stop holding your hand

I will never stop opening your door

I will never stop choosing you babe

I will never get used to you…'

Masen never once stops looking at me. All of his emotions surge through me as he sings his song to me. There is no doubt as to who this song is about.

It takes my breath away and all the bullshit I let get between us to protect myself just disintegrates into thin air.

The only thing between us at this moment is the soundproof glass and I doubt Quil would appreciate it if I barrelled through it.

"Is this a…"

"Keep it." I interrupt as I leave the booth.

"Alrighty." He calls out behind me, chuckling.

I wrench open the door, enter the room, and stalk towards him.

"Was that okay? I know it wasn't on the list but the song came to me last week and the guys and I busted our ass getting it do…" Masen gets out before I attack his mouth, his guitar jutting uncomfortably into my abdomen as I get as close as I can, oblivious to the catcalls around us. He moves it out from in between us and pulls me closer.

I finally pull back breathlessly.

"I'm guessing you liked it." He's amused.

"Yeah, it was okay." I attempt for nonchalance.

His smirk tells me he sees right through me.

"Let's go get some food," I say to everyone but my eyes never leave Masen's.

I let them pack up and I go back to finish up things with Quil.

"We'll meet in around three weeks. I will give you a CD to listen to, then I need you to analyze it on several media methods- car player, headphones, home stereo- and then meet me back a week after that to fix anything. Then a week after that I'll have your digital copies ready for uploading. I strongly urge you to buy some CDs as well. Most promoters are going to want tangible music."

"How much is that gonna cost me?"

"Say we start with two hundred. Because let's face it, in today's digital music age, no one really buys CDs but you can give them to places you want to play at and you can sell them at gigs. It's a good investment, Bella. That will cost you around three hundred, give or take."

I suck in a breath.

"I'll just have to do it. Go ahead. Thank you, Quil, for everything."

"No problem. I'll see you in around three weeks."

I gather my things and stuff them in my bag. I turn to leave and notice Masen leaning in the doorway waiting for me.

"Are you ready?"

He smiles and nods, straightening up when I reach him. He takes my bag and slings it over his shoulder, intertwining my hand with his.

"Where do you guys want to eat?"

"I think pizza was the general consensus."

We join the others and Masen digs in my purse for my keys and throws them to Peter who rode with Brady.

"We will meet you there." He said as he ushers me to his car, opening my door for me.

"Don't wreck my car, Peter!" I call out, before folding myself into Masen's car.

Masen joins me, starts the car, and adjusts the radio volume.

"I think that went well." He says.

"It did."

"I'm sorry I was late. I know I need to work on balancing better."

"That would be nice." I agree, before grabbing his hand and gently squeezing, saying nothing else on the subject.

We make it to the restaurant and order quickly, as we are all famished. Luckily, the place isn't really busy so our food starts arriving at our table within twenty-five minutes. We are a lively bunch with Brady and Eric breaking out in show tunes in between slices of pizza.

When the check arrives, Masen snatches it up and pays before I can even protest.

"You can work it off later." He winks.

We say goodbye a few minutes later and I get my keys back from Peter. Masen tells me he has to make a stop first and for me to go ahead and he'll meet me there.

Weird, but okay.

I shower then get into my night clothes. Masen still isn't here so I decide to do some work to get ahead.

I'm engrossed in a client's payroll when my door opens. Masen frowns. "You should really lock your doors."

I ignore him instead focusing on the bags in his arms. Safeway is proudly stamped on them.

"What is all that?" I ask, even though I'm pretty sure I know the answer.

"My girlfriend is not going to be hungry as long as I'm around." His tone brooks no argument.

He places the bags on the bar and starts unloading them.

"Now, I know you know how to make your own pasta but I didn't know what ingredients you needed so boxed it is. Same with the pasta sauce." He shrugs apologetically.

I stop his hand from moving. And for the second time tonight, I attack him.

"Leave them. After all, I have dinner to work off."

"Why yes, yes you do." He throws me up onto the bar and my arms flail in surprise knocking over a bag of groceries. We both wince as we hear glass shattering.

"That would be the pasta sauce."

We both look at the mess I created.

"Leave it," I whisper into his mouth.

And we do exactly that.
