Chapter 11- Somebody That I Used to Know

The next three and a half weeks feel like a whirlwind for me and Bella. We keep up with our shows and radio spots, local morning talk shows, and somehow making time for us. We make each other laugh and think. We haven't run out of things to talk about, and we're writing new music like crazy! It's surreal, but what about this situation isn't?

We're sitting on the bus heading to a radio station in Dallas and talking softly to each other when I hear our names come over the speakers.

"This just in, guys. It seems as though Bella Swan might have a thing for her musical partners on stage and off! Rumors have been swirling for a few weeks that a romance has sparked between the famous singer and newcomer Edward Cullen.

In a brief statement released today by Anthony Masen, he says 'Bella and I were involved for about two years while we toured and made music together. It's her MO to go after her fellow collaborators. I wouldn't be surprised if I wasn't the only one left in her dust.' Well, everybody, Bella and Edward will be in the studio in about an hour. I think I have a new question to add to my list. Keep it on 106.1 KISS FM for more updates."

Bella's back is straight as a rod and she reaches behind her for Tanya, who immediately jumps from her seat and is crouching in front of Bella while they whisper back and forth. I turn in my seat to look at Rose, and she shrugs, but when her phone rings, she answers and walks to the back of the bus.

"Edward." Bella is composed but she looks ready to cry. "It isn't true."

"I believe you."

"Really? Just like that?" Bella sags into my side, and I pull her close to me.

"He's trying to stay relevant, and we gave him the ammunition. We should have been more careful, and for that I'm sorry." I tip her chin up so she's looking at me. "I'm not sorry about us though. I want you to know that."

Echoing my words, she says, "I believe you." She closes the distance between us and kisses me lightly.

"Bella, the news outlets want statements," Tanya says as she appears at our side again. "The record label wants to release a statement on your behalf."

"Will they release a joint statement from Edward and myself?"

"Let me find out." She scurries to the back of the bus as Rose reappears.

"Mom and Dad want to know what's going on, and the producer from the radio station wants you to know that the DJ will not be asking about this," she says in one breath and finally smiles. "Access Hollywood called. They want to get a reporter to you before the show tonight."

"Just me?" I ask as I pull my arm from around Bella.

"Well, yeah."

I look at my sister, and then to Bella. I see a vulnerable woman who just wants the record label to speak on our behalf and I know my answer. "I'll go on if Bella can be there too. If we're gonna do this, we'll do it together."

"Good call. I'll see what they say. Also, I seriously doubt that DJ is going to shirk around this, so get your stories straight and figure out what you're going to say." She moves to sit behind us, and I look again to Bella.

She's been here a lot longer than I have, and I have a feeling she'll know what to do and how to proceed better than I ever could. What I see when I look at her is a woman determined. "I loved Anthony like a friend—a brother even, but he was lazy and thought he was a gift to everyone who met him."

She sighs and bundles her hair up into a bun and smiles at me. "I know we had a song planned for the radio station, but do you know that Gotye song?"

I smile and nod. "Isn't that about a bad breakup though?"

"Isn't that what this has turned out to be? I want to send a message, and I think he might actually hear it this way." She sighs. "We're also calling Angela to get the ball rolling there. Anything to get him to shut up and end this once and for all."

"Is she going to be okay with this?"

"I've been in contact with her, and she needs to tell her story. She deserves for the world to know what a piece of scum he is." She leans into me again. "Should I grab your guitar?"

"Grab yours too," I say as she gets up. "We'll make this a duet he won't soon forget."

"Hey, everyone, welcome back. We've got a special surprise this morning—it's Bella Swan and Edward Cullen of Chance Music. Welcome. I am so excited you guys are here. I'm a big fan, and you've got a huge group of fans outside that are so excited to see you pull in today!"

"Thanks, Raven," we chime in unison.

"We're thrilled to be here with you and all these fans who came out to see us," I say as Bella sips her coffee. We agreed to let me take the reins, so to speak, and see how much would be directed at me or her and how much about Anthony would come up.

"Now, I have to ask … Volturi Records released a joint statement on your behalf this morning. I'd like to read it and give you the opportunity to comment if you'd like," Raven offers, and both Bella and I exhale.

We switched from the morning show to this mid-morning show because the other DJ wouldn't let up about what was going on with Anthony. Bella perks up. "That would be fine."

"'Volturi Records, Bella Swan, and Edward Cullen would like to acknowledge the personal aspect of their relationship. They had hoped to be more discreet, but new love blooms hot. Ms. Swan would like to formally respond to claims made by Anthony Masen earlier this morning that she has never had a personal relationship with Mr. Masen. He was a coworker, a friend, even like a brother to her. When he could no longer control himself on tour or in the studio, then and only then did Ms. Swan ask for the record label to intervene. Whatever ill will Mr. Masen is harboring toward Ms. Swan, and now Mr. Cullen, is not reciprocated by either of them.' Is there anything else you'd like to say about the matter?"

Bella moves to the mic, and I smile. "Just that much the same as in the way people interpret songs differently, I think Anthony has interpreted what has happened since our split very differently to what actually happened."

"I think it's safe to say that Bella and I very happy right now, and for him to come out now with this is just a ploy to try to drive a wedge between us," I add. Everything we practiced; everything we agreed upon.

"This is now the third time Anthony has disrupted this tour. Do you think he'll stop after this?" Raven asks as her producer mimes picking up the phone lines.

"I certainly hope he finds something better to do than bother us." I chuckle. "But if he hasn't, we have a song for him."

We answer some calls and give away tickets, and just before the two-hour mark, Raven invites us to sing live on the air.

Now and then I think of when we were together

Like when you said you felt so happy you could die

Told myself that you were right for me

But felt so lonely in your company

But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness

Like resignation to the end, always the end

So when we found that we could not make sense

Well you said that we would still be friends

But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off

Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing

And I don't even need your love

But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough

No, you didn't have to stoop so low

Have your friends collect your records and then change your number

I guess that I don't need that though

Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over

But had me believing it was always something that I'd done

But I don't wanna live that way

Reading into every word you say

You said that you could let it go

And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

When we wrap the song, Bella smirks and leans into the mic. "That took Edward and me twenty minutes. It would have taken Anthony a week to get those harmonies right." She laughs quietly, and I push her softly in her chair so she'll stop laughing.

The DJ and producer thank us for being there and being so gracious and open with them and the listeners. Bella and I walk hand in hand to the secure parking lot with our security team and laugh to ourselves all the way back to the hotel.
